As your Review the following Information…

Review from a “cultural perspective” – Not a “healthy food perspective.”

What does the following presentation show you about:

staple foods, flavor principles, and meal patterns.

Remember that what people eat is influenced by WHERE they live, not always what is available.

What foods can be grown and produced easily and readily.

Ex: Rice as a main staple crop in Asian countries vs. wheat as a main staple crop in the united States.

Ex: Root vegetables as staples in Russia (because of the cold climate) vs. citrus fruits needing a more warm, temperate climate.

Food quantity, food availability, and food quality are all independent issues within each individual country.

“Hungry Planet: What the World Eats”

ABOUT THE PROJECT…

American photographer Peter Menzel and writer Faith D’Aluisio have traveled the world documenting that most basic of human behaviors—what we eat.

The book “Hungry Planet,” depicts everything that an average family consumes in a given week—and what it costs. The pair released their book “Hungry Planet: What the World Eats” in 2005, showcasing meals in 24 countries.

In 2013 and 2014, their “Hungry Planet” portraits were exhibited by the Nobel Peace Center to give viewers a peek into kitchens from Norway to Kuwait and China to Mexico, and to raise awareness about how environments and cultures influence the cost and calories of the world’s dinners.

The pictures below all were taken by Peter Menzel.
