Atwood’s Machine A classic experiment in physics is the Atwood’s machine: Two masses on either side of a pulley connected by a light string. When released, the heavier mass will accelerate downward while the lighter one accelerates upward at the same rate. The acceleration depends on the difference in the two masses as well as the total mass.

In this lab, you will determine the relationship between the two factors which influence the acceleration of an Atwood’s machine using a Photogate for measuring acceleration.

Figure 1

OBJECTIVES • Use a Photogate to study the acceleration of an Atwood’s machine. • Determine the relationships between the masses on an Atwood’s machine and the

acceleration.

MATERIALS Power Macintosh or Windows PC mass set LabPro or Universal Lab Interface Graphical Analysis or graph paper Logger Pro string Vernier Photogate with Super Pulley

PROCEDURE Part I Keeping Total Mass Constant

For this part of the experiment you will keep the total mass used constant, but move weights from one side to the other. The difference in masses changes.

1. Set up the Atwood’s machine apparatus as shown in Figure 1. Be sure the heavier mass can move at least 40 cm before striking the floor.

2. Connect the Photogate with Super Pulley to DIG/SONIC 1 of the LabPro or DG 1 of the Universal Lab Interface.

3. Open the file in the Experiment 10 folder of Physics with Computers. A graph of velocity vs. time will be displayed.

4. Arrange a collection of masses totaling 200 g on m2 and a 200-g mass on m1. What is the acceleration of this combination? Record your values for mass and acceleration in the data table.

5. Move 5 g from m2 to m1. Record the new masses in the data table.

6. Position m1 as high up as it can go. Click to begin data collection. Steady the masses so they are not swinging. Wait one second and release the masses. Catch the falling mass before it strikes the floor or the other mass strikes the pulley.

7. Click the Examine button and select the region of the graph where the velocity was increasing at a steady rate. Click the Linear Regression button to fit the line y = mx + b to the data. Record the slope, which is the acceleration, in the data table.

8. Continue to move masses from m2 to m1 in 5-g increments, changing the difference between the masses, but keeping the total constant. Repeat Steps 6 - 7 for each mass combination. Repeat this step until you get at least five different combinations.

Part II Keeping The Mass Difference Constant

For this part of the experiment you will keep the difference in mass between the two sides of the Atwood’s machine constant and increase the total mass.

9. Put 120 g on m1 and 100 g on m2.

10. Repeat Steps 6 – 7 to collect data and determine the acceleration.

11. Add mass in 20-g increments to both sides, keeping a constant difference of 20 grams. Record the resulting mass for each combination in the data table. Repeat Steps 6 - 7 for each combination. Repeat the procedure until you get at least five different combinations.

ANALYSIS 1. For each trial, calculate the difference between m1 and m2 in kilograms. Enter the result in

the column labeled Δm. 2. For each trial, calculate the total mass in kilograms. 3. Using Graphical Analysis or graph paper, plot a graph of acceleration vs. Δm, using the Part I

data. Based on your analysis of the graph, what is the relationship between the mass difference and the acceleration of an Atwood’s machine?

4. Using Graphical Analysis or graph paper, plot a graph of acceleration vs. total mass, using the Part II data. Based on your analysis of the graph, what is the relationship between total mass and the acceleration of an Atwood’s machine?

5. Develop a single expression for the acceleration of an Atwood’s machine, combining the results of the previous two steps in the analysis.

6. Draw a free body diagram of m1 and another free body diagram of m2. Using these diagrams, apply Newton’s second law to each mass. Assume that the tension is the same on each mass and that they have the same acceleration. From these two equations, find an expression for the acceleration of m1 in terms of m1, m2, and g. Compare the expression to your result in Step 5 of Analysis.

7. For each of the experimental runs you made, calculate the expected acceleration using the expression you found with Newton’s second law of motion and the specific masses used. Compare these figures with your experimental results. Are the experimental acceleration values low or high? Why?

For three decades, the firm had reinvented and revolutionized the circus. From its beginning in 1984, Cirque de Soleil had thrilled over 150 million spectators with a novel show concept that was as original as it was nontraditional: an astonishing theatrical blend of circus acts and street enter- tainment, wrapped up in spectacular costumes and fairy- land sets and staged to spellbinding music and magical lighting. Cirque du Soleil’s business triumphs mirrored its high- flying aerial stunts, and it became a case study for business school journal articles on carving out unique markets. But following a recent bleak outlook report from a consultant, a spate of poorly received shows over the last few years, and a decline in profits, executives at Cirque said they were now restructuring a - Questions on christmas carol with answers - Bir official receipt sample - Path of exile checking resources forever - Marshall rosenberg quotes nonviolent communication - Zion christian church history - Manage market research - Professional real estate development the uli guide to the business - Accounts clerk job description - Wonder bakery manufactures two types of bread - Secp pakistan company name search - Why chinese mothers are superior by amy chua pdf - Codes and ciphers unsw - Feast watson 4l tung oil - How have epiphytes adapted to the rainforest - Discuss as a command word - Keep under god in the pledge of allegiance - Environmental Criminology - Case 3 - What is moral subjectivism - Picot statement paper nrs 490 - Australian industry participation plan - The manager of a store selling tea - Week 1 dis FIN - Www rjframing com au - Understanding pathophysiology 1st edition - How does bernard humiliate the director - Prince2 advantages and disadvantages - A vending machine automatically pours soft drinks into cups - Name three famous robots and tell what they do - Jimmy law artist analysis - HLS685 D3 - Policy - Beer pong blow out - Joe turner's come and gone pdf - Saturation and atmospheric stability lab 6 answers - Pediatric Nursing - Totaps for sprained ankle - Quiz league of london - Death has an appointment in samarra - Molar mass of alka seltzer tablet - The mr mc rule applies - Https pay usbank com sarh - What mistake did npr make when reporting the giffords story? - Designing team and team identity in team management - The outline on Interstitial Cystitis - Chap 2 and 3 assignment - The diploid number for humans - Boundaryless organization pros and cons - Act 1 scene 3 macbeth - Essay Guru ONLY - How to bubble in answers quick - Chemical equation for aerobic respiration - Smart goals for nurses - 3/3-1 - Recruitment request form doc - Manageengine servicedesk plus 7.6 0 exploit db - Create a brochure - Bsbrsk501 manage risk assessment - Foreshadowing in the help - Definition argumentative essay - Cisco ise wlc posture redirect acl - University of bath westwood accommodation
