The Deep River: A Story of Ancient Tribal Migration written by Bessie Head is one of many of Bessie Head’s works. Most of Head’s stories comes from her heritage and the history of her land. Bessie comes from Africa and depicts the history she grew up around. She chooses the title “Deep River” to compare it to the people of the village. Which symbolized the community spirit where they did not illustrate focus on the individual but on the group as whole. Bessie goes to say “the people lived together like a deep river. In this deep river which was unruffled by conflict or a movement forward, the people lived without faces” (1704). Portraying how the village should be running, but women, temptation, and social skills takes this river on a turn for possibly the worst. Monemapee was this village leader. Everyone looked up to him, and obeyed his orders as a leader. The story takes a turn when the village experiences a device of conflict after the death of Monemapee. The future of the village becomes a hot topic to the brothers leaving the villagers still with little say so in what happens to them. Sebembele stands up to become the new leader, but new leaders always come with new rules. Which is what happened in this short story when Sembele challenges the villagers to stand up and be heard as individuals. As he displayed this affection towards a woman of the village. The people of the village were not used to this way of life and were very hesitant. The followers of Sebembele makes their way out of the Deep River. “That day, Sebembele and his people packed their belongings on the backs of their cattle and slowly began the journey southwards” (1708) ...
