Contemporary
management is a key concept of management in the business organizations.
Contemporary management includes all the major functions and responsibilities
that a manager owns in the organization as planning, organizing, controlling
and leading (Jones & George, 2008). The main concern of
the contemporary management is to deal with the issues, conflicts and
situational matters that cause organizations to face challenges in their
performance. Effective management of the contemporary issues and challenges
support the organizations to be successful in the market. Managers analyze the
problem, create strategies and make decisions that result in long term benefits
for the company and increases its wealth for stakeholders.

The
main aim of the research is to analyze the role of contemporary management in
the UK based company. In analyzing the role of contemporary management all
important and relevant data will be used to generate the most accurate
information regarding the practical implementation of the contemporary

The literature
review provides understanding towards the topic of research with the support of
previous research studies on the same topic. In the research topic exploration
literature is reviewed from the published and unpublished sources. In the
literature review process previous quantitative and qualitative research
studies based on the primary data collection methodology and secondary data
collection methodology are reviewed. Authentic resources of data collection the
books, journal articles, magazines, and websites are used to review the
literature and collect information about the research topic. In accordance with
the research conflicts raised in the organizations causes problems for the
management of the company to maintain the organizational environment healthy
and positive for all employees. Contemporary management issues are mostly
related to the human resources management.
However, in
accordance to some research studies, contemporary management can be referred to
the complete process of management that deals with issues at managerial levels.
The societal agendas are considered for the specific process. The theory and
practices for the management are practiced congruently and produces disjoint
between the industry and academia. In accordance with the literature review,
contemporary management is mostly concerned with human resources management (Gupta, 1992). There are certain
causes for the human resource strategies in the productive workforce that
induce competitive advantage in companies.
The human
resource management employs different specialists and qualified staff for the
disparate cultural backgrounds. Surface level diversity is also now as complex
as deep level diversity. Even gender differences are projecting conflicts and
stereotyping in the workplace that creates a negative environment for the
organization. Contemporary management uses some appropriate ways as focused on
the staff development and the continuous training of employees to avoid such
issues in the organization. With the environmental changes, the managers are
facing more challenges due to undergoing the transition of society (Jones, 2009). There are conflicts
among the employees and social problems caused by the stakeholders of the
company.
There are
different driving forces such as knowledge-based society, leading integration
of growing goods, and trends in the labor through the political and national
boundaries that projects the importance of the highly effective management
system in the organization to deal contemporary issues. There are some other important areas that
also generate challenges for the contemporary management as collaborative
arrangements, production process, and development of information technology.
The changes in these categories result in increasing focus on the social,
ethical and environmental issues. There are some paradoxical approaches related
to the management at different levels and demands.
The increased
employee empowerment and involvement in the organization result in intensified
competition and demand (Wong, 2011). Competition can be
managed positively in the employees through the effective management strategies
liking giving rewards and appreciating best performing employees but also
motivating other employees to be like them. Rather than criticizing focus
should be on improvement otherwise competition in the employees promotes social
evils in them and reduces their performance. The improved quality, social
performance, and environmental conditions are major factors that induce impact
on the contemporary management. The goal of research emphasizes the concept of
management that attributes to authoritative and autocratic goals in the
management.
According to
Fleishman 1953, the human management is a conceptualized behavior about the
orientation of people. In accordance to a research finding contemporary
management also includes managing the external environmental issues for the
company (Gupta, 1992). Stakeholders demand
the strategies and decisions of the company that support the society. While
sometimes competitors spread a wrong news about a company that can influence
the image of the company in the market.
Management at
that time plays their role to overcome the situation. They communicate with the
society and develop strategies that benefit the society in order to regain the
lost customer's equity and goodwill of the company (Mutti &
Hughes, 2001).
The manager has taken into consideration the social norms and culture of the
society while taking the decision. In the current approaches towards management
eco-friendly strategies has great importance. Basically now in present age management
of the successful companies focuses on the wealth maximization policy rather
than the profit maximization.
Managers prefer
to have long term benefits as compared to the short term benefits. Therefore
while resolving issues contemporary management focuses on the strategies and
actions that benefit the stakeholders and in long term promote the good image
of the company in the society. A research study claims that companies while
making decisions focuses on their customers (Mutti & Hughes, 2001). Management takes
the decisions that benefit their customers and as a reward for this, they earn
customer satisfaction. Successful companies treat their customers as assets and
try to build customer equity by offering rewards and discounts to them.
In accordance with the research studies,
contemporary management includes all these planning and strategies that benefit
the company by improving the operations of the company. Contemporary management
organizes the workforce and tasks to be completed according to the goals and
mission set by the corporate level management of the company (Armstrong,
2006).
Contemporary management faces challenges and issues in this process as time
mismanagement, lack of interest of employees towards the better performance and
unawareness towards the desired outcomes. Contemporary management deal with all
these challenges and issues. They organize the workforce and provide awareness
to them about the desired outcomes through communicating with them and
providing them clear instructions about what and how to do.
Managers also
lead the employees and monitor their performance to get the desired outcomes.
it is under the responsibility of the manager to control the whole workforce
(all his subordinates) and get work from them. In the organizations, management
plays the role of monitor, spokesperson, liaison, and disseminator. In
accordance with the research studies increase in the globalization trend in the
business world is causing problems and challenges for the managers of the
organizations. Because of globalization organizational culture is getting
complex that is difficult to manage.
Research design and methodology
that covers the sampling method, data collection information and limitations
for the research are mentioned below.
There are
several types of investigations for the research as descriptive, hypothesis
testing and exploratory. The investigation type for this research study is hypothesis
testing. The research will explore the causes and impact of the contemporary
management in the light of the developed hypothesis. The investigation will be
based on the detailed analysis of the current situation of the Walmart
contemporary management strategies and problems. The research is to investigate
the Walmart Company towards the contemporary management issues and challenges that
are only possible with the primary data collection from the company. Therefore hypothesis
testing type of investigation is selected rather than the descriptive and
hypothesis testing.
The data
collection method is selected in accordance with the investigation type for the
research. The data for the analysis will be collected through the use of
quantitative data collection method. The quantitative data collection technique
questionnaire and interviews will be used to collect the required information
about the management of the Walmart Company. The questionnaire will be
developed according to the hypothesis of the research. Close ended questionnaires
will be developed to collect the most relevant responses only. While interview
from some samples will be also conducted with structured formal interview
questions about current efforts of the company towards contemporary management
issues.
The population
for the research is limited to the employees of Walmart market that are about
2.3 million working all over the world. Accessing all employees and covering
all the different geographical regions of the world in which Walmart operates
in impossible therefore the samples will be only selected from the United
Kingdom. Samples will be based on the 200 employees of the Walmart in the
stores and outlets of the company and 100 from the main workplace of administration.
Samples from the organization will include both the managerial and
non-managerial employees of the organization.
In the research,
there are some accessibility issues in the data collection. Access to the
employees of an organization for the collection of the data is a difficult
task, however, I will manage the issue by getting permission from the managers
directly. Access to all population of the research topic was also a difficult
job that I managed by selecting the samples from the population.
In the research
ethical issues will be taken into considerations to avoid unethical acts and
decisions. As the sharing of personal information of the samples without the
permission of sample (that person) is an unethical action, therefore, personal
data of the samples will not be mentioned in the research publication.
Accessing and using information about a company is also an unethical act that
will be avoided completely by getting permission from the company for data
collection and research interviews. In interviews, hidden cameras and recording
of the interview without the permission of the sample is also considered as
unethical in the research. Therefore before recording the interview, I will try
to make it possible to have permission from the sample. Otherwise, the
recording of interviews will not be made for evidence or further
understandings. The data collected from the organization will not be used for
any wrong purposes and the secrets of the company will be kept secrets. All
efforts will be made to avoid unethical consequences and actions to make the
research ethical and original.
A comprehensive
plan for the data analysis of the collected data is developed. According to the
plan, data will be analyzed through the use of modern statistical techniques.
In the research correlation, a statistical technique will be used to test the
hypothesis based on the variables that may have the relationship with each
other. For instance, strength and direction of the relationship of decrease or
increase in the organizational performance and contemporary management will be
analyzed through the use of correlation statistical technique. However other
statistical techniques and graphical presentation of the data will be also used
to analyze the findings from the collected data responses.
There are some
limitations in the research because of certain reasons. The research does not
cover all the population. Therefore there is the possibility that actual
results vary from the analyzed results. The reason behind this is cultural
differences and other differences in the geographical regions. In this
research, samples are only selected from the United Kingdom to project the view
of the whole company. However, there are chances that managerial strategies of
the United States completely vary from the strategies adopted at the United
Kingdom as in each geographical region manager's selects strategies according
to social norms and culture of the society. Social factors directly influence
the managerial decisions and strategies, therefore, there are chances that
contemporary managerial issues also differ for both regions and require
different management solutions. In such a situation considering the results of
this research same for the whole Walmart Company is not a good idea.
Timetable and
schedule for the research are developed that covers all major activities
required for the completion of the research in an appropriate manner. Major
activities like data collection and literature reviews are given more time in
the timetable as compared to the simple activities of review and rechecking the
written work. Writing activity after the interpretations of the results also
demand about 10 to 15 days minimum. Data analysis is only statistical analysis
that can be done within 5 days easily.
Contemporary
management resolves the conflicts, issues, and challenges in the company that are
most of the time generated by the diversity, unethical environment and globalization.
The research is conducted on the Walmart Company that is efficiently managing
contemporary issues in the organization. Contemporary management issues produce
problems for the managers and overall organization if not given complete and
adequate attention. In the research data, quantitative data collection method
will be used to provide a comprehensive overview of the company with the
support of responses by the selected research samples.
