As a student, reading and writing
are, indeed, the two most essential activities that I need to do in supporting
my study. However, many times I feel that reading and writing in a classroom
could turn out as a boring thing to do. The reason is obvious, as a student, I
have to read and write according to what my teacher asked me. Thus, if I found
the topic of my reading and writing to be a little dull or complicated, then I
would not be able to give my best writing on that topic.
However, my perception of reading
and writing changed completely due to one of the most memorable experience I
get in my life. It happened about one year ago when my mother gave me a book as
my birthday gift. That time, I remember I was laughing when my mother told me
that the reason she gave me a book as my birthday gift was. She said to me that
reading would sharpen my brain. That time, that was quite illogical for me
since I did not have any interest in reading.
So, the book was titled with “A
Girl Named Rosa” which written by Denise Lewis Patrick. The book describes the
true story of a girl named Rosa Park, who stood up for the equal right for
every human. One of the most interesting stories from the book is when it tells
how Rosa Parks, a girl who actually came from the African-American family
refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white lady in the year of 1955.
This started to get my interests
since I knew that in 1955, race discrimination was clearly appearing in the US.
Thus, Rosa Parks is one example of a brave girl who really stands up to fight
for her rights. The book also presents how she went through her tough childhood
in the era of discrimination.
That book really has inspired me
to find out more about this brave girl name Rosa Parks. Then I started to
search more from the Internet, and I also started to get my interest in writing
about civil rights. In my opinion, equal rights for human are still a debating
case in the USA. From my reading, I have found lots of evidence of violations
in the context of equal rights for human which appeared in the country in previous
days.
I started to write and share my
opinion in an online forum, discussing about the equal rights that supposed to
be given by every single human being. And that is not only in the US but also
in every country whole over the world. In my view, this is a quite ironic thing
for all of us actually since every human born to be unique with their own
personality and character. Then why we should make any discrimination about it?
Yes, equal rights or civil rights
is an exciting topic for me, and it was even giving me the motivation to read
and write more about this topic. Just imagine how the people who unfortunately
have to experience the violation of their civil rights at that time, just
because of their race and skin color.
However, throughout my readings,
I also have found out how the US has been improving its acceptance in diversity
since the era of great Martin Luther King. In addition to this, the elected
Barrack Obama also has become strong evidence of the equal rights movement in
the country as well.
Nowadays, I have become quite
interested in reading since I have acknowledged that reading will support me in
exploring my writing ideas. In fact, I also have noticed one thing, that maybe
it was the classroom environment - with the teacher who was observing me all
the time - which made me not interested and uncomfortable in reading and
writing.
Then I started to read and learn
my school textbooks outside of my classroom. Sometimes I just bring along my
school textbooks to the park where I can read it comfortably. Plus, I also
always craving for the latest news that I can get by browsing the Internet.
Some of that latest news sometimes inspire me to create my own writing as well.
Hence, my mother was right,
reading really is sharpening my brain. In fact, by reading, I can explore more
knowledge that I have never known in the past days. Plus, reading has also
supported me in getting better grades in my study as well. But most of all, the
most important thing for me is that reading and writing are two things that
unable to be separated. The reason is because they supported each other.
By reading, you will get many
ideas for the topic that you want to write. Yes, both reading and writing will
really give benefit not only to our academic life but also to our future life
as well. Why? Because from both reading and writing really able to sharpen your
brain
