A classroom brings together diverse student. These students
belong to different background sand it each student has different abilities and
personality. Therefore, a classroom has dynamic environment. However, a teacher
has to deal with all the students within a classroom and ensure the learning of
every student. Therefore, in order to become an effective teacher and meet the
diversified needs of individual students, a teacher required to implement
innovative and creative teaching strategies (sarah, 2018). However, it is quite
difficult for the teachers to select the most appropriate teaching strategy to
meet the needs of individual students. This study is intended to identify and explain
different teaching strategies along with their advantages to comprehensively
understand the importance of learning strategies.
Thesis statement of
Strategies for learning
Learning strategies are very helpful for both teachers and
students to understand the subject clearly.
Background of Strategies for learning
Definition of the learning strategy
The learning style of an individual is referred to the relationship
between the individual and his\her ways of learning. On the other hand, the
learning strategy is referred to the behavior and attitude of the people that
is orient toward the attainment of the goal. Different authors have defined
learning strategies in different ways. However, learning strategies are defined
as the processes and techniques selected by the learners to achieve the
specific learning objective. According to the author Audrey McCrary Quarles,
the learning strategies are the ways of assisting teach (Audrey,
2018).
How important for teachers to find out the best strategy
The key responsibility of a teacher is to ensure learning of
the all the students present in the class. A teacher has to deal with diversified
students having different needs and abilities. Consequently, the biggest challenge
of teacher is to meet the needs of all the students and ensure learning. In
this regard, an effective learning strategy provides assistance to the teacher in
inspiring and motivating the class. However, there is not a single learning
strategy that fits for all the solution. Therefore, based on the feature of
every learning strategy and needs of the students a teacher has to select an
appropriate strategy to inspire the students to achieve their learning
objectives.
Why students should use different strategies
In this contemporary education system, with the increasing
use of technology, availability and access to abundant information and advent
of globalization, the level of competition has increased drastically even an
educational level. In this regard, the students are required to initiative in
learning processes, inspect learning material, possess autonomy and understand
the content to compete with the world (Claas Wegner, 2013).
Every student has different goals, abilities and attitude
toward those goals. In this regard, when the students use the learning
strategies independently, these strategies enable the students to focus their
attention, gather and organize information, understating and remember the
content to effectively accomplish their learning goals and tasks.
Types of learning strategies
Listing the learning strategies
There are many different learning strategies that are used to
assists the leaner for achieving their individual and collective learning
objectives. The learning strategies are collectively divided into two main
categories. These categories include; self-study strategies and group study
strategies.
Self-study strategies
The self-study strategies are focused on the learning needs
of an individual. These strategies are used for independent learning. The
self-study strategies enable the learner to achieve their individual and unique
objectives without the help of others. Following are some of the self-study
strategies.
Unlike the self-study strategies, the group-study strategies
are focused on the learning needs of groups. These strategies are used for the
collective learning. These strategies inspire and assist the learners to
collaborate with each other to achieve their collective learning objective.
Following are some of the group-study strategies.
Self-study strategies
The self-study strategies can be used in following ways.
Retrieval practice of Strategies for learning
The teacher can ask the students to put away their devices
and lecture material and write down everything they know and remember about the
topic or term. After the activity, the students will match their answered and
with the material and correct their mistakes.
Distributed Practice of Strategies for learning
The teacher can make study schedule for a long period of
time and identify the activities to repeat the study material after specific
intervals. In this way the students are advised to distribute their study time
for studying different material.
Elaboration of Strategies for learning
In this strategy the students are encourage to recall the
information and ask questions to themselves about the topic or content. In this
regard, after giving lecture on a topic a teacher can ask the students to
elaborate the topic into their study plan (Gonzalez, 2016).
Group-study strategies
The group-study strategies can be used in following ways.
Cooperative learning of Strategies for learning
The teachers encourage different students with mixed
abilities to work in collaboration with others in a small group or in whole
class activity. Teachers assign a task like role play or conducting scientific
experiments to the group of students and ask them to complete the work in
collaboration (sarah, 2018).
Discussion of Strategies for learning
During a lecture a teacher ask the students to share their
knowledge, experience, opinion and thoughts with the class and discuss
different aspect of tropic with the whole class.
The pause procedure of Strategies for learning
The teachers take the short interval during the lecture and
pose a problem and ask the students to rework their notes and discuss in pairs
or groups to clarify the key points, solve the problem and raise question (Raudys,
2018).
The advantages of learning strategies
The learning strategies have considerable advantages
associated with them. An effective learning strategy assists the teacher to
meet with the needs of different students’ whereas it enables the learners to
achiever their personal learning objectives. Following are three most
considerable advantages of using learning strategies.
Improve mind functions of Strategies for learning of
Strategies.
Effective learning strategies enhance the cognitive
abilities of the learners. Learning strategies inspire and motivate students to
share their thoughts and ideas with other and ask questions. For instance in in
the elaboration strategy the learners are encouraged to asks question from
themselves. In this regard, students think about different aspect of a subject
and create reasoning and connection with the material. In this way, the
learning strategies improve mind function of the students.
Enhance the cooperative learning of Strategies
The group learning strategies enhance the cooperative
learning among the students. These strategies are used encourage the students
work in collaboration and support each other to achieve the collective learning
goals. Such as, in discussion and cooperative learning strategies the work in
close collaboration and share their knowledge and thoughts with other members
of the group.
Encourage students to participate and to be creative
The learning strategies enhance the learning of the students
and give them the confidence to participate in the discussion and learning
process. Effective learning strategies encourage all the students to show their
creativity and share their ideas and opinion with other. The learning
strategies encourage students’ initiatives, empower them, engage them and
stimulate their learning. The learning strategies placed that students in the
center of the learning process and encourage them to participate in the learning
process and show their creativity (Claas Wegner, 2013).
Conclusion on Strategies
for learning
It is a challenge for a teacher to meet the diversified
needs of various students within a classroom because every student is unique.
Therefore, it is selection of an appropriate learning strategy is even
critical. However, a teacher can use a combination of different teaching
strategies like self- learning and group learning strategies. In this way a
teacher can provide motivation and leaning environment in a classroom and
enables the students to achieve their respective learning objectives.
