Framework for managing multicultural project teams
Research Idea:
This research aims to examine cultural diversity and
managing differences in teams of cross-cultural projects.
Purpose:
The purpose of this research is to present the important
tools that help to evaluate the diversity management in cross-cultural project
teams. The paper highlights the challenges in handling projects that comprise team
members from a background that is culturally diverse. The paper discovers how a
project manager can effectively manage and influence multicultural project
team.
Design/Methodology/Approach:
market survey results are used as a
research approach. Total four questionnaires are designed to characterize: communication
style, intercultural competence, a potential role being plated by an employee
when he or she is part of the team, and the emotional intelligence level. Five
variables are used in the research: nationality, residence (rural or urban), age,
profile, and high school graduate.
Findings:
the proposed framework of the research has implications
for project managers who are committed to improve the performance and
productivity of the multicultural teams. The proposed framework’s utilization would
not transform multicultural teams instantly into a high performing team;
however, it identifies the dimensions of cross-culture that should be
considered.
Originality/Value:
Though the advantages of the culturally diverse
team are acknowledged in the paper, the cultural difference among the team and challenges
to manage culturally diverse teams can cause misunderstanding, conflict, and poor
project performance; this is the value added in the literature through this
paper.
