Living in a diverse society, one has chance to
see other communities like Christians, Muslims, Hindus and Jewish to practice
their religious activities, festivals and beliefs.
For my ethnography project, I decided to participate in recently, Deepavali or Diwali function of Hindu
community at my friend’s house. Diwali
is called festival of lights and event of bringing prosperity, among the Hindu
community and is celebrated every autumn. It is very popular festival in Hindu community;
it is celebrated as it is spiritual victory of good over bad, light over
darkness and knowledge over illiteracy (Hindustantimes.com, 2018)
Diwali function at my friend’s house, there were
around 25-30 people including men, women and children. Almost, all age group of
people were involved aged to children. There were so many married couples and
young singles. All the people were very happy in the event, celebrating,
dancing, and hugging each other with warmth. People were lighting candles and
dancing on music. It was very good environment and worth seeing scenes, where
everyone was happy and enjoying the moment. Then, there was a special Indian
food menu, as most of the guests were Hindu, so their famous vegetarian foods
were there (Crossman, 2017).
The main sociological concept, I can link to my
observation that culture is shared, linked, adaptive, symbolic and integrated.
When, I was seeing all people celebrating the event in same way and all the
children was seeing what was happening at the event and learning all things as
a child. The other concept, I can link to that even is Identity, all the people
who were in the event were dressed in their particular event dresses,
especially women, who were particularly dressed up as per their Diwali function
requirement (Maitreyee, 2018). The way people were dressed up and prepared,
one can easily say that it is for their particular cultural event
Language
is the major aspect in anthropology, which is very important aspect and uses in
social gatherings and relations. I observed the language of the people involved
in the function, they were majorly speaking in their own language, which was
Hindi, that how they were speaking, their tone, style and manners (Hammersley, 2010)
Concluding my observation about the Diwali function,
I can strongly say that people do behave and respond to their cultural
anthropology in the way they have learned in their childhood by their ancestors.
Same is the case with my other two concepts, language and Identity, I applied
on this event
