Herman Boone was given the duties of coach of the team who
was racially divided. Boone asked Yoast who was the previous head coach to
assist him so that white parents won’t create an
issue. This is the forming stage of team development. In this stage, Herman assigned seats based on position
rather than a race so that team members
can know each other efficiently. In the beginning,
Gerry & Julius often fight with each other because both belong to different
race but when they started to know each other they become good friends, and this was the storming stage of team
development (West, 2012).
Due to the creation of racial
harmony by Bonne the divided individuals started to become a team and it was the norming stage of team development
were team members become united against a common
goal. Titans went through a winning season which is the performing stage. In
the end, the team won the title and moved forward to win their next title which is the adjourning stage. In the movie, the Boone developed a team which was racially divided and due to the
efforts of Boone the team finally won the title.
Which of the strategies to manage conflict (Piscitelli p. 288 – 289) do
you think Coach Boone used to deal with the students and the various
problems/conflicts? Were they effective? Why? /why not?
The analysis of the movie Remembers the Titans show that Boone has used
accommodating strategy for managing the conflict. Gerry asked Boone that he
wants Ray out of the team because Ray missed the block on purpose which leads
to injury to the team. Boone supports the
decision of Gerry which indicates that Boone uses the accommodating strategy
for managing the conflict which might go worst if Boone does not react
rationally. It can be said that
accommodating approach worked quite
efficiently and Boone deals with the student
in a professional manner (Proksch, 2016).
Another strategy which Boone used
for managing the conflict is the compromising strategy. Yoast wants to bring
Coach Tyrell because he was with him for ten years. At this point, Boone compromised and said that he would allow coach Tyrell
to train the individual team. However, Boone said that he would keep an eye on both Yoast and Tyrell. If
this strategy is analysed critically than
it can be said that it works for Boone because it allows Boone to gain the support of Yoast. If
Boone did not compromise at this moment,
then it might not be able to get the help of Yoast which might cause severe consequences for him (HEATHFIELD, 2018).
How can emotional intelligence show the path to success? Use specific
examples from the movie.
Emotional intelligence plays a crucial
role in achieving the desired goal. The
goal of Herman Boone was to unite the team and to lead the team in the path of
success. Boone knows that the team is
divided racially. Therefore, the first
thing that Boone does was increasing the interaction between the team members.
This action shows the emotional intelligence of Boone. Furthermore, Boone accepts the decision of the team captain and allows it to take its own decision. All these
actions of Boone indicate the emotional
intelligence of Boone (West, 2012).
Boone takes the assistance of Yoast
because he knows that racial divide persists
in the town and he might not get accepted by the white parents. Therefore it
can be said that the decision of Boone was rational. The way he leads the team
and created racial harmony clearly state that emotional
intelligence has enormous significance in
achieving the desired goals. If Boone did not unite
the team, then it might not be able to meet
its desired results. Boone possesses not only
good communication skills but also possess exceptional conflict
management skills as well. Through this movie,
it can be seen how emotional intelligence can lead
to the path of success (West, 2012).
Using the theory from your textbook, explain how Coach Boone used
aggressiveness, assertiveness and passiveness and give specific examples
Herman Boone used aggressiveness
when he talked to Yoast. He said to Yoast whether he accepts or not he is the
new coach of the team. He also used aggressiveness strategy to create racial
harmony in the team. At the time when
Boone family become the victim of attack Boone react quietly aggressively with media. Boone showed assertiveness when
Gerry asked for removing Ray from the team. Boone clearly states its position and express his feeling to
Gerry. In the movie, Boone clearly shows his emotions
and remain confident (Himes, 2008).
Boone becomes passive when he realised that the team members become united.
When Gerry and Julius become good friends,
the behaviour of Boone becomes passive.
The expression of Boone also shows passiveness when he saw the neighbours welcoming him when he came back. In
the movie, the different behaviour of Boone
can be seen. The reason for Boone’s different behaviour was the demand of the situation. In short, it can be
said that Boone knows how to deal with the case and that’s why he managed the conflict quite efficiently.
Boone’s good communication, conflict and emotional intelligence skills can be seen throughout the movie.
Choose 3 cases from the movie where civility worked as a catalyst to
conflict resolution
There are many cases in the film were civility worked as a catalyst in resolving the conflict. The proper behaviour
of Boone during the conversation with Yoast allow Boone to gain the support of Yoast. Boone assures Yoast that it will enable
Tyrell to coach the team, and here
civility plays a significant role in conflict management. If Boone did not allow Tyrell, then the situation might get worst. Civility can be seen in the situation of Gerry & Boone conversation as
well. Boone politely supports the
decision of Gerry through which no conflict arises between them (HEATHFIELD, 2018).
In the movie, it can be seen that
Boone reacts quite confidently and did not take any decision which leads to
conflict. Gerry on the other become good friend with Julius which shows that good
behaviour of both the individuals allow
them to become good friends. Both the members worked for the common goal that
was to become the champion once again. Boone possesses
not only good communication skills but also possess exceptional conflict
management skills as well. His polite behaviour
resulted in the success of their whole
team (West, 2012).
