Plato Essay Apology (Dialogue)

            The excuse is the actual address that Socrates delivered in favor of his defense at his legal proceeding. The word apology means protection, and it is not about any apologies. Thirty years old or older male citizens were selected as jurors who presented their services on that day. Socrates called them as “men of Athens” instead of the usual mode of address “gentlemen of the jury.”

            Socrates was accused that he teaches people the wrong lessons. I do not speak anything like that, and I have no part in all these types of conversations. He said that if anyone had heard me saying anything like and he come here as a witness that he is not true. You all people think that I am jesting, but I will make you sure that I am not laying.  As a result of this investigation, men of Athens, I acquired much unpopularity, which is hard to deal with and is a heavy burden. I was accused that I am the person who corrupts the young. If some ask people I have to teach the young and which thing corrupt them they are all silent because they have no valid reasons.

        People are very violent and curial; they are only filling your ears against me. “Men of Athens” I have given you much explanation to defend myself, and I think this is sufficient. If you, believe me, you can spare me, but If you don’t, you can kill me and then you can sleep well.

        In my opinion, if the jury were neutral, then Socrates can get justice.

        Only those people deserve the honor that is in favor of his redemption. He was presented at the age of seventy years old; he is the first time to appear in a law court. So here he doesn’t know how to speak there so if they don’t like his way of expressing they should not pay attention to the manner of his speech.

        No one was ready to listen to him because they were all together and they against him. So It was better for him to defend himself against all the accusations that were placed on him. Many people accused him, but none of their allegations were right. He was not afraid of Antes and his friends who are more formidable, but he was much afraid of these accusations. All these accusations made me very unpopular in public, so he also doesn’t want to live a life that is without honor. He tried to save himself but he cannot because the jury was not in his favor, so he had to die at any cost. He thought it is better for him to die than to live an honorless life. But if the judgment was neutral, he can save himself from death.
