On
April 19, 1930, New Hampshire, in Manchester Dr. Mitchell was born. In 1951, at
Rensselaer Polytechnic institute he received his Bachelor’s in degree of Civil
Engineering, and in 1953 from MIT he received his degree of Master’s of
science, and in 1956, he done his Ph.D degree from MIT. In 1955, James Mitchell, for the waterways
experiment worked as a soils engineer after that in the United States Army organization
of the engineer as an officer in 1956-1958. At Berkeley, in 1958, James
Mitchell joined the faculty at the California University, and in 1993 James
Mitchell finally becomes the Emeritus Cahill Professor. In 1994 he resigned from
University of California as well as at Virginia Tech he joined the faculty. in
1999, he leave the Virginia Tech as University Distinguished Professor,
Emeritus. He becomes the supervisor of 74 Ph.D.
Students
for dissertation research, as well as James Mitchell, published more than 350,
which also include the fundamentals soil behavior book, in its third edition
that has been published. The following awards we mentioned that from the
American Society of Civil engineers Dr. James Mitchell has received. James
Mitchell received the two time the Norman medal. James Mitchell also five times
received the Middlebrooks Award. James Mitchell also received the H. Bolton
Seed Medal as well as Lecturer in 2004. James Mitchell also received for
exceptional scientific achievement the medal from the NASA (National
Aeronautics and Space Administration). As well as in 2001 for Soil Mechanics
and geotechnical engineering he received the Kevin Nash Gold Medal of the
international society. He is the winner of ASCE excellent project along with
good leader’s award in education in 2006.
