Ethics has great value in our life. It shapes
our work routines and personal life. In all manners and in all professions of
life successful people are those who benefit society and the public. People who give preferences to their ethical
responsibilities are the great people as they contribute to developing a
supportive and peaceful society. Each profession and job position has some
ethical duties and responsibilities but at managerial positions these
responsibilities are inevitable. The manager is leaders who influence the
behavior and performance of the whole organization; therefore, they have more
ethical responsibilities as compared to others. In the case of BigPharma drug
mislabeling I am assumed as the project manager.
The role of the project manager is
to design the process of testing, manufacturing, and critically analyze the
quality control system that is provided by Great Engineering Ltd. The legal
conditions are imposed on the production of drugs in the pharmaceutical plant
in Ontario. In BigPharma Company laser technology will be used at production
and testing areas. The use of laser technology is an innovative method but
still requires precision for the labeling process. Therefore, the project
manager must measure the iteration of new and existing products. The
development process is required to be maintained appropriately. The series of
testing for the product increases the probability of accurate work.
The labeling process is required
to mention the date of production and other specifications on the product, but
3% error ensures the glitches in the production process. Although the
percentage error is smaller the wrong labeling of the drug in BigPharma Company
can induce an impact on the health of the user. The project manager in the
company is responsible to improve the system and to boost up the accuracy of
operation. The system is technological and can be improved. The technical team
and engineers are required to eradicate the hazards in the system. The
inaccurate date mention on the drug can harm the user badly. The impact of drug
public can be reduced by increasing accuracy in the production process.
Ethically, being a project manager, I will be liable to provide maximum
accuracy to the medicine. The use of wrongly dated or expired products can be
dangerous for the user. The system provides benefits to the user but if it
fails in providing accurate information, there comes a strange impact on the
health of the user. Being a project manager, it is my duty to provide accurate
and authentic information about the product.
Other than work responsibilities
and duties at great engineering I have some public duties and responsibilities
also. For instance, under the Code of ethics, a project manager and system
engineer are required to safeguard public welfare. In accordance with the legal
and ethical considerations as a project manager, my duties are to design and ensure
a production sector that produces products for human benefits. I am responsible
to protect the public from products that can cause endangering the public.
According to this, my duty is to fix the situation and prevent incorrect
labeling. Even Big pharma Company has said that the production of these drugs
will benefit thousands of people but it can affect my duties. Thousands of
people may get benefit from this product but many people will also suffer
health issues by taking wrongly labeled medicines that will clearly present my
negligence. Therefore, I cannot compromise on my duties.
Basically, BigPharma and Great
Engineering are employer companies in this case. As a project manager of these
companies, I have some duties and responsibilities. For instance, I have to
complete the project within deadline with the high accuracy of project
outcomes. Fairness and loyalty also include in work responsibilities to client
and employer organization (Cgcom.es). Developing a functional
quality control system and functional production line are also included in my
work duties at the BigPharma project. Somehow, I am also responsible to manage
financial, material, and human resources appropriately to complete the project
according to the pre-defined budget and plans (on which both companies were
agreed and signed contracts). Providing a production system with 3% error rate
is not appropriate according to my job duties but if employer companies are
accepting production line in this condition then I do not have any more
liabilities and responsibilities.
Thus, in the light of this project
manager is able to fulfill all duties assigned by the employer and client
company. But if we view this case in the light of public interest and ethics
then it is clear that the project manager is not able to fulfill his duties. Because
of his poor management production line will function inappropriately that will
definitely cause to produce defected or incorrectly labeled products that are
not desired by him by the stakeholders of this project. Thus, there comes a question
in our mind, if duties are not done in the desired manner then what should the
project manager do. The only solution to this problem is to work more on this
project.
The project manager should work
more on this project as the project manager should search for information about
the problem. Monitor the process and find out cusses of error to make
corrections in the process (Dukes, Braithwaite and Moloney). Somehow, if it is
not possible then the project manager can find another alternative way of
inspecting the quality and accuracy of ready to pack products. For instance, he
can ensure an after-production quality testing system in the company that will
help the workers at the production line to keep the defected product aside.
As
discussed earlier ensure the accuracy of the production line goes under the
duties of project manager. Therefore all liabilities will go to the project
manager in case of project failure or errors raised in the production processes.
The project manager will be charged for this professional misconduct. In this case,
the 3% error rate is because of the poor system engineering and process design.
Therefore, project management should be considered as a responsible entity for
these consequences, error and poor management. Somehow, the situation in the
case of BigPharma is relatively different. Big pharma Company is ready to take
responsibility for this 3% error rate and agree to legally indemnifying the
employer company (Great Engineering Company) just to leverage their financial
advantages. Therefore, project manager will not face potential consequences. But
instead of the project manager, the administration of Big pharma Company will
be responsible for this act. Somehow, other than legal consequences there are
some ethical consequences also. Similarly, ethical responsibilities are also
there that cannot be ignored. There is no compromise on human health.
Endangering products must be controlled. System reengineering is inevitable in
this case for the sake of human health safety.
Big pharma only promised that they
will take responsibility for error but they did not promise that they will
further work on this problem (Davidson). Thus, it is clear
that the company is ready to run this production sector and manufacture
endangering drugs to supply in the market. This is really terrible. BigPharma Company
should plan for the removal of error. If in current situation delay is not
possible and they want to benefit thousands of people while comprising on the
health of 3% medicine users then they should develop some alternative plan for
inspection and prevention. Things should not go in the wrong way as it will in
negative consequences for both, society and company.
