        Health maintenance means taking care of your health in order to prevent diseases rather than having to cure them later. In order to prevent diseases a healthy lifestyle has to be adopted in addition to this, regular checkups should be maintained. This is done to ensure that the physical, emotional and mental health is not in danger. A healthy diet should be taken. A healthy diet basically consists of the right amount of food from every food group. The five main food groups are vegetables, whole grains, fruits, meat or poultry and low dairy fat products. Every food group has its own valuable nutrients that when consumed bring a number of benefits for our body. The sufficient level of consumption from these food groups varies depending on factors like age, gender and whether a person is growing or not. As we have all heard that healthy diet brings many benefits to our physical, emotional and mental health but it is important to realize what these benefits are.

 Healthy diet gives us the energy that is required:

        Are we all not familiar with that lethargic feeling that we experience due to the excess consumption of unhealthy food? A healthy diet helps to keep us active throughout the day so that we can perform our roles more effectively.

Healthy diet improves our mood:

        When we consume a good diet it improves our health that eventually makes us feel good. This improves our mental health too since we get confident and it boosts our self esteem.

 Healthy diet reduces the chances of diseases:

        Maintaining a healthy diet decrease the chances of a person being vulnerable to diseases for instance, stroke, heart disease and high blood pressure. The reason behind this is that a good diet provides all the nutrients that help in the growth and repair of for our cells. Moreover, other health problems like diabetes, certain types of cancer and arthritis can also be prevented.

        In addition to this other factors need to be considered in to maintain health especially physical exercise. Physical activities are of many different types like running, swimming and jogging. Physical activities can make us happier by reducing the feelings of anxiety and depression, exercise can help us lose weight as it burns calories, it strengths our bones and muscles, it can reduce the risk of chronic disease and it can help with our brain health and memory.

            Furthermore, protecting our skin can also benefit our health. Skin exposure can lead to skin cancer. Sunscreens and caps can be used to protect our skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Cigarettes and alcohol consumption should be reduced. This can protect from heart diseases and mouth, lung or throat cancer. A list of all the medicines that you take should be made; no new medicines without a consultation with the doctor should be started. It’s better to stay up to date with vaccinations and shots in order to protect yourself from viruses. This can be done by regularly visiting the doctor for checkups.
