The Seveso disaster
happened on 10th July afternoon, 1976, when a white fog absconded
from a slight chemical plant in Meda, Italy. The people of Seveso as well as
Meda that time did not realize what was actually happened and they were just
watching as the fog slowly drop away on them (worldatlas.com).
Meanwhile, a disaster which
occurred about thirty years ago in Bhopal, India happened in the night of 2nd
December 1984, was a mass accident at the pesticide plant. This disaster even has considered
as one of the worst industrial disaster in the world (TAYLOR).
The causes of Galileo’s Famous Gravity Experiment
The Seveso disaster was
caused by the industry activity of the Industrie Chimiche Meda Societa (ICMESA).
The company was famous as a manufacturer of Trichlorophenol (TCP), the
materials meant for use in the production of antiseptic soaps.
Tetrachloropedibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) was one of the components of the fog which
reported for about one kg of 2,3,7,8 TCDD was released at that incident. The
composite is claimed to be an established carcinogenic which produced once the
temperature upsurge for more than 200° Celsius from the production process of TCP. Thus,
the accident was caused by an uncontrolled upsurge temperature along with its
compression which steered up the construction of TCDD and its ensuing outflow
since the shelter faucets at the top of the reactor blasted out (worldatlas.com).
In the other hand, the disaster in
Bhopal, India was caused by the entrance of water into a tank that was
containing Methyl isocyanate which triggered a chemical reaction and
consequence in the construction of huge Carbon dioxide. This reaction developed
the temperature within the tank up to above than 200 °
Celsius. Since the tank could not be able to control the pressure, then a
result from it, a mass amount of toxic gasses was leaking to the environment.
Thus, about 30 tons of methyl isocyanate, along with other toxic gasses
released by this incident (TAYLOR).
The effects of Galileo’s Famous Gravity Experiment
The
effects of the Seveso disaster occurred for more damage on animals than human
beings. The report mentioned for about 447 cases of Chloracne attacked the
children at that time, which is a skin disease due to the contact of toxic
hydrocarbon chemicals. About above than 80,000 animals had to be slaughtered,
in order to protect the food chain, and numbers of domestic animals died
because of the incident (worldatlas.com).
Meanwhile,
the effects of the disaster in Bhopal, India was leading more damage and caused
to more people died. About above than 600,000 residents were being uncovered to
this toxic and deadly gas, and the number of deaths from this incident reached
the number of 15,000 people (TAYLOR).
Aftermath of Galileo’s Famous Gravity Experiment
The effect
of Seveso disaster in the community turned out to reflect the industrial,
political, and religious conflicts in the society. The disaster even has made
the European
Community released the regulations for industrial safety in 1982, named
with the Seveso Directive (worldatlas.com).
The same
thing also happened aftermath of the disaster in Bhopal, India. Since the
disaster considered as the worst industrial disaster in the world, the
community along with the government in India has released many regulations
based on this incident, such as The Environment (Protection) Act in 1986
and Factories
Act in 1987 as well (Broughton).
