In the Derbyshire county there lies a small town name Shirebrook. The
town is renowned for its technical background which dates back to the roman
era. Over the past several years the city becomes a major industrial &
agricultural center. In the year 1896 Colliery Corporation began exploring coal
in the town. Since the opening of the colliery corporation, the population of
the city started increasing. Due to the rise in population, the city faced
several issues like housing and sanitation issues. The life of the people who
work in colliery is improved when the Mining Industry Ac, and the Sankey
Commission was established in 1920.
Shirebrook’s dependence on
Colliery
The people of Shirebrook depend heavily on Colliery because it not only
provided employment opportunity to the locals but also a provided social
framework to the town. There were other industries in the village as well, but
as compare to colliery they were quite small in scale. Colliery employed 2000
people. Due to the presence of colliery in the town the town was flourishing
and exporting coals to different parts of Europe. To the city, the company has enormous
significance (Economist & Kourdi, 2015).
Closure of Colliery &
Aftermath of Shirebrook
The Colliery closed in the year 1992 which have a massive effect not
only on the town but also on the people who were employed by it. At the time of
closure, more than 1000 people were working there. It was Colliery who has
provided the social structure to the town and developed the village to its current
state. Due to the closure, the town started to experience a massive economic
decline. In the year 1996 colliery was handed over to English Partnerships. It
can be said that the people of Shire brook town were unemployed and
experiencing issues after the closure of the company (Lehmann, 2016).
Shirebrook Regeneration
Project
As significant part of the town was dependent on colliery the local
district council and Bolsover district council joined hand to create a small
business park in the city so that people can be employed in the park. The
project have massive significance for the village because without such plan the
people of the town will remain unemployed. The people of the town were
desperate for new opportunities in town and this project’s aim was to provide
new employment opportunities. Not only the project is going to provide employment
to the people but will attract more investment in the area. The rationale behind
the Project
The project includes the establishment of 38 hectare Business Park in
the town along with 1250 new houses. The project aims to provide approximately
2000 jobs to the people. The initial funding for the project was 24 million.
The initial funding of the project was approved in 2001. The major reason
behind this project is to regenerate the Shirebrook town who was facing decline
after colliery closure. This project has the potential to attract huge amount
of investment in the town which will not only make the town economically strong
but also the standard of living of the people will increase (Hornstein, 2015).
The new development in the town is more sustainable and have the ability
to attract further investment in future. In the year 2010 the business park was
occupied up to lot of extent despite economic decline of the world. The project
started in 1896. The sports direct planned to open the head quarter in the park
which will further provide 2500 job opportunities to the people. After the
completion of the business park the economic viability of the town has
increased up to lot of extent and in near future there is a possibility that
the town will experience further economic growth in future. The project ended in
1992.
