This article in an interview with
Catherine Crier about business ethics.
She talks about corporate ethics and recent scandals, and gives insight
into what we can do to help enforce ethical business behavior.
As
a business student, I feel that this issue significantly pertains to me. I will be entering the workforce very soon,
and I will without a doubt be faced with some ethical questions and
situations. That is why I feel it is
important to be aware of the problem, and also of ways to help prevent
unethical behavior.
I
think Catherine’s paragraph about the individual being the core building block,
and an individual having the power to affect change is very important. I know that many people, including myself,
may feel insignificant, and even afraid to speak up in a situation. Being a college graduate fresh out of school
can be intimidating enough, without all the pressure of dealing with unethical
decisions.
As
a stakeholder of ethics in the corporate world, I think it is good that
stricter penalties are being put in place.
This should help the higher up managers be more ethical, which will
trickle down into the lower sectors where I will work. I would much rather work for an ethical
manager and know that he supports my decisions than work for an unethical
manager and have him disapprove of my ethical behavior.
I
think it will be a long time before the issue of business ethics is
resolved. It is a concept that is
gaining fresh attention as businesses do unethical things. Teaching ethical business behavior will help,
as well as having speakers like Catherine Crier talk about ethics to college
students.
