In the literal
sense, philosophy refers to as a liking towards wisdom. And in a broader sense,
it is an activity undertaken by people when they attempt to understand the
truth about their surroundings, themselves, and their connection with the world
along with people. Philosophy is also an academic discipline and the concepts
are the same. Students undertaking this discipline are generally engaged in
arguing, answering, and asking for answers to their questions about themselves
and life. For systematizing this study, it has been separated into major study
areas.
In
its moral form, philosophy constitutes ethics. The domain of ethics is applied in
various areas of life and it involves determining wrong and right acts and
behaviors. At the moment, various philosophers have collaborated to divide
ethics in such a way that it now has three branches.
These
branches include applied ethics and metaethics along with normative ethics.
With this division, it has become easier for scholars and students to
understand ethics. Generally, ethics is concerned with what is wrong or right
but it also provides answers to questions which are about universal truth in
the form of metaethics. Ethics which justifies what is wrong and what is right
is normative ethics. Meanwhile, applied ethics evaluates where large issues
like environmental issues and war are right or not (Putnam, 2014).
