Looking at the situation and
facts, here are three options, which Colgan can use to address the situation:
He should make Boyd the manager
of the department, but then the question is what to do with Simpson?
Simpson should be moved to any
other department or made the assistant to assist Boyd or even he can be asked
to leave the company
Simpson should be asked to move
to any other department by saying that he is an experienced employee, and we
need him in another department, where things need to be improved
If first option is taken, it is
certainly a good one for the company to obtain its vision of great customer
services experience. It would also be great for Colgan to work with his own
friend. But on negative side of things, I would be wrong to do so, because then
what will be done with Simpson? He has been a good manage for so many years,
and taking him off the role will not send a good message to employees, and
Simpson himself.
If second option is taken, it is
again beneficial for the company because they will get a manager, who acts like
a leader, and knows how to drive performance for delivering best customer
services experience. It would also be great for Colgan to have a friend in such
an important role. But then making Simpson an assistant of Boyd will be a wrong
strategy. It will send the message to employees that favoritism has won here
and Boyd got the position so quickly, because he is friend of Colgan. Simpson
also may not be able to perform his duties as an assistant.
If third option is taken, it can
be a balanced one out of all options. It can help the company to get a best
person, Boyd on the role, which he can handle very well. It would also allow Simpson
to think positive about Colgan and company that they respect his abilities and
experience, and now want to use that experience in any other department to
streamline processes. It would also help employees to stop thinking negatively;
they would know that Simpson was leaving for other department, so assistant has
got to fill the position of manager so that things can be kept on right track.
