In
this research, our primary objective is to analyze that whether the social
media affect the life of a student in a positive or negative aspect.Since the
technological development and the emergence in the early 1990s, people have
become more aware that their environment and means of communication have been
shifted to the better, due the introduction of social networking sites (SNS),
these sites have revolutionized the world of communication today. Two-thirds of
the world's population use (SNS) as connection tools to people throughout the
globe, since participating in social networks has increased roughly by 17% from
2016 to 2017. The facilitation of these sites occurred by flexible accessibility,
users can communicate through their mobile phones and laptops. The phenomena of
social media exploded as a category of online discourse, allowing people to
exchange data and messages, expanding student's connections, web engagement,
and broadening of knowledge.
According to the Lau (2017) the author possess that at
present society social media become the indispensable part of daily life, among
universities students mainly, they are a mostly heavy user of social media.
Multitasking in social media has been prevalent increases. Social media
multitasking as well as social media influence the performance of university
students. On a daily basis, the student participates in the social media, about
the potential negative impacts of social media on students well being there are
growing concerns. These aspects helped social network sites
to gain credibility over the years as a trusted source of information and
platform where organization and audiences can interact. Millennials are leaving
the old routine and referring to SNS with their studies which exhibits some
benefits that in some way boosts communications between students and
instructors (Lau 2017)
in addition to the increased opportunity one student has with another (Lau 2017).
These
steps have eliminated or breached the gap that existed in means of
communication relying on traditional methods. Today information is available by
a click of a button which tends to the immediate exchange of resources (Lau 2017). Social networks
serve as a learning method to university students since the learning
environment they engage in is as like these sites (YanYu, et al. 2010). All universities worldwide provide a
suitable learning environment to their students this is due to the student's
psychological well-being to conduct lifelong learnings. Research shows that millennials
online social networking behavior can acquire physical and mental well-being (YanYu, et al. 2010).
As
we know, nothing unusual is ever wholly one-sided, so it is for SNS as it comes
with adverse effects too. Although students have access to their smartphones,
they are more likely to perform the task that distracts them from their purpose
(Tarhini, Hone and Liu 2015). When students are
offered to use smartphones in a lecture, approximately 48% of the entire class
are found to be distracted by social networks. Several studies show (Alwagait, shazad and Alim 2015)that multitasking
during class with mobile phones or any carriers had adverse outcomes on
learners, this is due to different stimuli carriers’ project that disorders
students on doing their specific task. Challenges originate when SNS are used
in class due to the confusions these networks show concerning the instructor (M and selvaraj 2013).
This
is due to the lack of communication that blocks the students from the way
different than the instructor's intention. Balancing between social networking
and academics is almost impossible, stimulations that SNS expose are handled
with students in the form of distraction that has a negative consequence on
both the class and the instructor. Social networking sites are portraying a
picture of addiction. 80% of teenagers are users of social media, neglecting
any guidance and management. Heavy users, in a personal level, reported sleep
deprivation due to the excessive use of the internet (Wensworth, Midleton,
2014) which in return was correlated by academic performance and was described
by "Poor." The human withstands many environments and is known for
its unique adaptation but is also known for its limited memory, processing
information from different challenges (multi-tasking) is on the top of the
level of distraction.
According to the Alwagait, shazad, & Alim (2015), the
author suggested in this research as in the world India is
the most significant third country regarding internet users, along with high
social as well as the mobile audience. From their studies diverting students
social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut. On social media students mostly spend their
time. There is a loss of safety as well as privacy, for connecting with friends
social media provides the opportunities. Nowadays the primary objective of the
students must be education as well as their future career.
Moreover,
on social media, most of the students rely on accessibility. It means that on
learning as well as retaining information, the focus is reduced. Among students
community, the study also points out the popularity of social networking sites.
The world is revolutionized by the social networking sites as well as social
media, than ever before bringing us closer. Moreover, for a better life or
better tomorrow students could exploit this. To connect, stay in touch, share
views but not waste time on it might be used (Alwagait, shazad and Alim 2015).
"The
increase of social media decrease the academic performance of the
students" this can be conducted that the research is not satisfied through
the findings of this study. Social media as well as the GPA scores separately
examining the variables. On a weekly basis, it was found that social media a
positive skew where most of the students don't use the social media
excessively. Some students showed
excessive use of social media, but that is the rare case. On the off chance in
the distribution, average GPA scores displayed a small skew of negative
students. With a few low ratings, the scores were high. A student spends most
of their time on Facebook as well as Twitter. Besides the excessive use of
social media, students in this study felt that management of time, as well as
football, were the main factor that plays a vital role in negative academic
performance.
