Pfizer
did keep its focus on growing as one of the leading pharmaceutical companies on
global scale, and this urge also kept them looking for new opportunities in the
industry. A company can look to acquire other small companies to increase their
product range, get more resources as well as find new distinguished position in
the market. The cost saving could be another reason for Pfizer to look for
these mergers as resources gathered at one place with more productivity can
certainly decrease costs. The increase in profitability also remains to be an
important factor for every company, which looks to do corporate restructuring
through mergers and acquisitions. However, it is always depend on the market situation
and the circumstances, which forces companies to merge with others. For one
company, a merger may be a great opportunity, but for the second company, it
may be a reason to survive from any big loss like getting bankrupt (SINHA, 2012).
Pfizer was already one of the
leading companies in the global pharmaceutical industry after buying Warner Lambert,
and now their urge to acquire Pharmacia
Corporation is going to make them even bigger in the pharmaceutical market. Pharmacia
Corporation was dealing with some issues, so it was looking to get merged with
any big giant of the business, and this is the moment when Pfizer stepped in,
and Pfizer purchased Pharmacia Corporation in 2003. The company made this
merger with the deal closing at $60 billion, giving more solidity to Pfizer as
strongest player in the market. Before this merger, the global pharmaceutical
market share for Pfizer was at 8%, and with this merger, they will be capturing
11% of the market share. The annual increase in their income will jump from $32
billion to a level of $46 billion. It would allow Pfizer to challenge the
strong position of GlaxoSmithKline PLC, the world’s largest drug company. The
company is going to gain so much with this merger and it would also allow them
to capture the attention of other small companies struggling with their survival.
The Pfizer and Pharmacia Corporation merger is going to change the course of global
pharmaceutical business. The merger has been an important one to set the
roadmap for Pfizer t become a huge success in the global pharmaceutical market (Casalmir & Rhee, 2003)
