Plastic surgery is a surgery
procedure that can change the appearance of a person’s face or body as per
their liking. Cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery are not the same but they
are related closely. These both surgeries improve the features of a person’s
face or body. Plastic surgery includes repairing the defects of a person’s body
or face by doing a reconstruction surgery. Cosmetic surgery helps to enhance
the features of a person by surgery. (Gupta 2016)

In order to enhance and beautify
the features of a person and their appearance the procedures and techniques of
cosmetic surgery are applied. The goals of achieving aesthetic appeal, better
symmetry and proportion are the reasons for some people to go under the knife.
These surgeries are performed on various parts of body, face and neck. It is
elective in order for proper functioning of treated parts. Cosmetic surgeries
involve facial contouring, rhinoplasty, chin and cheek enhancement, breast
enhancement, breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, facial
rejuvenation, eyebrow lift, face lift, eyelid lift, neck lift, tummy tuck,
liposuction, laser resurfacing, gynecomastia treatment, botox, fillers etc. The
cosmetic surgery is getting famous in people of all ages. (surgery 2018-2019)
Cosmetic
surgery as a trend of the impact of plastic surgery on teenagers
Cosmetic surgery has become an
exclusive trend for people especially women. Now it has become a trendy option
for teenagers having adolescent hang-ups. Now kids in their early teens are so
inspired by this new trend that they want to get cosmetic surgeries as a
fashion on their birthdays. According to doctors this should be banned in
children for such young ages. They say that children or teenagers should only
go for cosmetic surgery or plastic surgery if there is a medical reason
attached to it. In some countries if doctor practice any surgery of this sort
on children or teenagers then they have to face imprisonment for two years. As
a reward for graduation girls get their lips plumped up by cosmetic surgery in
some western countries.
Reason
behind cosmetic surgery for teenagers
The reason behind this trend
getting so famous is basically the society and its values. The common beauty
practices these days include plumped and fuller lips, chiseled chin, fuller and
lifted eyebrows etc. as a sign of beauty. The teenage is that age when people
emphasize a lot over the looks and what people think about their appearance. If
a person has a nice body and beautiful features according to the standards set
by society or the beauty industry only then you are accepted in to the popular
crowd. Sometimes teenagers want to go under the knife for personal interests
and sometimes because of what people think about their dull appearance. (Online n.d.)
Teenagers
and Plastic Surgery
Teenagers give surprising reasons
as to why they want to get a plastic surgery, sometimes it is to look
acceptable to their peer, sometimes they need a feel to stand out in the
popular crowd, and sometimes to feel more comfortable with their bodies. More than
200,000 people go for plastic surgery in their teen ages back in 2013 and now
the numbers have up surged. Some teenagers may get a plastic surgery because
they have a defect in their body and they do not feel comfortable with it for
example gynecomastia i.e. having excess breast tissues, such teenage girls go
for breast reduction surgeries. Some teenagers go for laser removal of their
birthmarks or scars. Some teenagers try to camouflage their excessive acne
scars by dermabrasion etc. (Singh 2015)
Some of the common types of
plastic or cosmetic surgeries that teen agers seek are breast enlargement, acne
or injury scarring, nose jobs, protruding ear correction, breast reduction, and
asymmetrical breasts etc. young people can be mean at times to each other, they
call each other names on their personal appearance. For example,” look how big
is that kid’s nose”, they say such disturbing things to each other without
realizing how deep its impacts can be on their young minds. Such mean things
can scar their personalities and they are driven to take surgical actions to
modify their appearance. Teens should have emotional maturity when it comes to
taking such big steps; they should do this for their personal interests or
satisfaction and not to fit in the crowd. Any surgery whether plastic surgery
or cosmetic surgery has risks and may go wrong at times so it is important for
teens to have a realistic grasp to its risks and limitations. (Teens and Plastic Surgery 2018)
Understanding
the risks of the impact of plastic surgery on teenagers
One of the big concerns regarding
plastic surgery in teens is that there bodies are still in the growing process
and it is still maturing. There may be more development to occur in their late
teens or adulthood and they may increase of decrease their weight. This may
change their bodies of impact adversely on their bodies in case of liposuction
or breast augmentation in case of women. There are no clinical trials available
for risks of such procedures. In case of breast implants in women there are
serious complications because in the first three years there is risk of
infections, capsular contracture, loss of sensation of nipple, hematomas and
seromas and hypertrophic scarring. These implants only last for 10 years so
there is a need of repeated surgery, it may interfere with mammography and no
milk for breastfeed. It is very
expensive as well. Liposuction is also dangerous because it can cause
infections, damage skin, vital organs and nerves, blood clotting and fluid
loss. Cosmetic genital surgeries are complicated and painful and there is
complication about infections. People only see the benefits but not the risks.
Impacts
of plastic surgery on teenager
Plastic surgery may have the
ability to improve lives of some teens but it has also negative impacts. Media
propagates the idea of beauty and different standards of beauty they have set. The
numbers of people getting cosmetic surgery done is increasing and there is
dramatic rise. From 2005 to 2015 there came a rise from 28,900 to 51,000 since
then. Celebrities also have an impact on this rising trend just like Kylie
Jenner or Kelly Zellweger. 40% of people only get facial plastic surgeries to
get better selfies. Social media and celebrities through such mediums have made
people believe that to get that glorious beauty they have to consider taking
this extreme step. There is an increased visibility in the teen agers to get
impressed with the glossy surgically enhanced perfection of celebrities and get
a plastic surgery done. There is a great demand for these injectable fillers
and botox as well as whitening injections for getting that beautiful face and
body among teenagers especially. (solicitors 2017)
