Finland
has been facing a major population crisis, with its constantly plummeting birth
and fertility rates from the past eight years. According to this article, in
less than two decades the country’s population will start shrinking to a record
low with fear of extinction of its heritage in the further future.
The
article stipulates a couple of reasons behind this crisis; firstly that of the
decrease in fertility rates and the increasing age of mothers due to which it
is difficult to bear child birth, and secondly to economic stagnation that has
prolonged since the last decade which leaves little thought for family planning.
This article cultivates thought in terms of how different cultures have
developed different modes of thinking and how they prioritize things in their
lives, and that such little things have such magnanimous effects on entire
civilizations.
The
article is very interesting due to the fact that it shows us exactly how
population has an effect on whole economies and what factors act as a determinant
for the application of economic models. It teaches us how such issues can
reflect on every aspect of a country’s well being and that even in this era of
technological development and instant solution based approaches we can still be
challenged by fundamental requirements of nature, the effects of which can
sometimes prove to be catastrophic. Moreover, the article also indicates that
women should recognize that their contribution to the world is elementary and
respected and that they have the power to shape an entire nation.
As
for Finland I believe that for a country that is experiencing such a major
calamity, it is crucial that the government devises specific laws to secure a
future for its generations and heritage. For instance, countries like Turkey
and Japan have already realized the lag in their population and have introduced
reforms that facilitate and incentivize child birth.
