The airline industry has been
dealing with so many aspects and challenges over time and there has been
various elements, which made their considerable effects on the airline
industry. The first one is Paris Convention of 1919. It was kind of first
international convention, who made an effect to address the aerial navigation
and its relevant regulations. In international aerial navigation, intricacies
as well as political difficulties were coon, and this convention tried to deal
with these issues. The countries have different regulation and ideologies on
air navigations, and this convention helped to reduce the confusions in this
regard [1]
Chicago Convention on
International Civil Aviation was approved in 1944, which was another important
development in the history of airline industry. With the help of this
convention, a UN based agency was formed with the name of International Civil
Aviation Organization (ICAO). The purpose of this agency was to regulate and
coordinate international air travel. It made considerable effects on airline
industry on international level by establishing some rules for aircraft
registration & safety, airspace as well as transit air fuels taxation [2]
The other important development
for airline industry was the five freedoms of the air points detailed in the
Chicago convention. These five points were instrumental in deicing the facts
between countries regarding giving privilege to land as well as enter each
other’s airspace. These freedoms allowed states that air service of one country
can use the territory of another country without landing, and using territory
by landing for non-traffic purposes etc. There were few additional freedoms as
well, which made a huge impact on airline industry that how it will operate across
the international borders [2]
The above mentioned developments
led to make bilateral air service agreements between two countries to finalize
terms on regulation commercial air transport in their territories. The first
significant bilateral agreement in this regard was Bermuda Agreement between
United Kingdom and United States of America. These agreements were crucial for
airline industry as they developed the roadmap for airline services that how territories
will be used and what one country would allow to another country. These agreements
had the capability to effect personal licensing, maintenance, production as
well as designs of aircrafts as well.
The treaty of open skies was
signed in 1992 by United States and 23 other countries across the world. It was
an agreement between the participants for doing mutual aerial territories
observation for different purposes. This treaty was significant for the airline
industry as such treaties have came up with more liberalization of international
air service and air transport, which allowed the industry to look for new opportunities
across the borders. This treaty was important to maintain more flight safety,
and helped airline industry to achieve this feat with the passage of time [3]
