Cultural intelligence or
CI is quite significant when it comes to both personal negotiations and
work-related negotiations. The success rate highly depends on it when there are
members in the group belonging to different cultures. I was satiated with the scores
that I got as all the dimensions had sufficient scores except for the
behavioral which I now know needs more attention. I have carried out various
tests by volunteering for work in various companies without a cost and it
helped me in all the dimensions except for behavioral as I didn’t have that
much of an experience interacting with others. Additionally, I have to yet to
receive any feedback as I haven’t had an employer or manager assess my
personality. Though, I did get the comments that my interaction needed
improvement and that is what I aim to do. The knowledge that I got in class
along with scales help me in doing a better practical work. I need to interact
and get diverse experience for the improvement of my behavioral dimension.
Four Dimensions scores:
CQ-Strategy or
"metacognitive" : 6
CQ-Knowledge or
"knowledge" : 4
CQ-Drive or "drive" :
7
CQ-Action or "action"
: 5.6
Overall CQ score: 5.65
Overall, I was pretty satisfied
with my scores. My lowest score was in the knowledge category since I don’t
think I can quantify exactly how much I know about the rules and cultural
values of hundreds of different cultures. The questions in that section were
too broad for my understanding. I can assert my high scores in the Strategy and
Drive section to my upbringing in a Military family. Growing up, our family
moved every 2-3 years due to the nature of my dad's job. As a result I have had
to be conscious of how I interact with people from varied cultures living in
different parts of the world. I seek to gain more knowledge of various cultures
and enjoy interacting with people from all over the globe. I continued to
experience this when I moved to America from India at age 17 and enjoy living
in a country with people of varied ethnicities.
Cultural Intelligence can be
applied to company culture's as well, not just in the traditional sense of
culture. I recently interviewed with Amazon and their entire interviewing
process is based around an Amazon "culture fit". They asked me a lot
of behavioral questions surrounding their 14 leadership principles that defines
Amazonian culture. Amazon as a company is highly dedicated to customer service
and is at the forefront of innovation. They asked me to give examples of how I
have handled difficult customers in the past and how I have improved processes
to give them a feel for a cultural fit within Amazon. I strongly believe that
more employers need to give more value and focus to Organizational culture fit
when interviewing job applicants. I did receive feedback at the end of the
interview on how my answers aligned with their culture at Amazon.
This scale as well the SINS
scales that we have used in class has been really helpful in putting the theory
that we learn in class into a better practical perspective. It has made me
realize how my personality type and values play into my choice of negotiation
tactics. I have also learnt about areas that I can improve based on my
knowledge in different aspects of cultural intelligence. I do believe that I
can be a better negotiator if I can develop a thorough understanding of
different cultures and their norms. This can also help me perform more
effectively in workplace situations that require adaptability to cultural
diversity.

It is true that Cultural
Intelligence or CI is very important when it comes to either personal
communication or business related work. In big corporations, there is a
diversity of cultures and ethnicities which sometimes makes it difficult to
work effectively with them because collaboration and communication both are
necessary among employees. I also agree that as far as negotiation is
concerned, a personality with broader cultural tactics and skills is effective.
In various situations at the workplace, knowing different cultural values can
help in efficient collaboration and producing well results for the corporation
as a whole.

I'm from Puerto Rico but have
spent more time living in Florida (Miami, Orlando) and Texas (San Antonio,
Dallas). I'm very observant of other people's culture just because I'm
fascinated by the large world we live in, but I haven't really ventured this
globe beyond Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. I would like to, though.

I agree that for
interacting with people from different cultures, it is important to spend some
time with them, interact with various people from the same community and
understand just how they have adapted to their cultural values. Living in a
specific region captures the person and doesn’t allow that individual to get
enough experience about diverse cultures. It doesn’t mean that visiting other
countries or regions is necessary because there are different cultural
communities also present in a specific region. Interacting with their members
can also offer a lot of knowledge about how the culture works. Though, visiting
different countries can expand the magnitude.
