Social networking sites are one
of the most popular online activities with a high user engagement. There has
been a global increase in social media usage since January 2017 with 13%.
However, Saudi Arabia has the largest year-on-year increase in social media
users since January 2017 (32%), a 17% increase compared to the global average
(see Appendix A) [6]. The Arab Social Media Report provides
an overview of Twitter users in the Arab world, the findings of the report are
the total number of active users in Arab world which reached 5,797,500 users
and the country with the highest number of active users is Saudi Arabia with
2.4 million users [1].
Twitter generates massive data
which can be opinions, emotions, and sentiments. The estimated number of tweets
produced by Arab users are 533,165,900 tweets, Saudi Arabia alone produced 40%
of all tweets in the Arab world [5]. For this amount of data, it’s too
difficult for a normal user to analyze. It’s estimated that 80% of the world’s
data is unstructured and not organized in a pre-defined manner [7].
These tweets are usually difficult, time-consuming and expensive to analyze,
understand, and sort through. It is impossible manually sorting through
thousands of tweets, customer support conversations, or customer reviews, it is
just too much data to process manually.
Solution of Social media platforms
Our project “Public’s Radar” is
the proposed solution to the above problem. It is a web-based application that
uses sentiment analysis which is also known as Opinion Mining, it is a field
within Natural Language Processing (NLP) that builds systems trying to identify
and extract opinions within a text. However, Sentiment analysis is extremely
useful in Twitter monitoring as it allows us to gain an overview of the wider
public opinion behind certain topics. Using “Public’s Radar” will make the
process quicker and easier than ever before, it aims to allow us to identify
and categorize opinions expressed in a piece of tweet in order to determine
whether the writer’s attitude towards a particular topic, product, ... etc. is
positive, negative, or neutral.
Moreover, “Public’s Radar” has
many advantages in different areas such as in business area, users can check
the opinion about a specific product they placed on the market in order to
improve the business processes and the customers satisfaction. Also, in the political
area, it can help in predicting the result of an election.
