The two stories are set in two
distinct cultures but follow the same themes of post colonialism. The girl is
about the values colonialism has brought to the culture. The sense of authority
in both stories by the ones superior to the characters reflects the values
instilled by colonialism to accept without reasoning but as usual. It reflects
how weak will be ruled over by the ones in authority and maybe exploited.
The girl somehow can tell us
about the good cultural effects of colonialism as the mother wants to instill
good characteristics into her daughter. She has acquired the standards of
colonizers and wants the daughter to adopt a lifestyle where she is more
organized and respected in the masses. Although the advices may seem as orders
as coming from someone of authority as mother which may reflect the negative
dictatorial feel of colonialism but overall it displays how cultures evolve to
become more civilized by the means of colonialism. Shared values have always
been a positive of colonialism as argued by different historians. The girl is a
mix match of negative and positive aspects of colonialism affecting private
lives of people.
On the other hand “The gold watch”
uses different themes to reflect the ills of colonialism on the mindset of
people and how they cope up with different mental health issues. The key
character lost his job and cannot question the authorities no matter how much
unreasonable they are. It also shows how colonies work. They exploit the
resources and talents to leave the person or country without any direction but
by gifting a small gift which doesn’t matter like a gold watch. It shows how
the acceptance of colonial mindset is passed onto different generations.
