Both stories highlight the effect
of post colonialism and how it interferes with lives of people till date.
Different cultures perceive different cultural values from colonialism. There
can be no middle path when it comes to colonialism. The Girl may reflect
certain positive aspects of colonialism but it shouldn’t be ignored that the
values the mother thinks should be in her daughter comes from seeking
validation from the one who colonized West Indies. We do not have the answer if
the region was not colonialized. Self-identity is somehow lost. The Gold Watch
confirms the superior thinking attitude of the colonizer that harms the locals
of the land but to the people in authority a small present seems a tradeoff for
self-respect of the individual.
Colonial mindset remains a
greater issue that exists in the colonized countries which has led them to
culturally evolve on their value and seek validation from the culture of those
who colonized them. Colonialism has altered the mindsets to be accepting the
ones in authority disrupting the democratic mindset of the people. The
colonized communities lack the sense of rights and self-esteem.
