Ethical issues although don’t appear at a surface level but
they are present for sure, residing deep regardless of the interview. For this
paper, an interview was conducted at Ysbyty Gwynedd to investigate and probe
more about the ethical issues lying there which are practically invisible. While
interviewing different various other challenges were registered other than the
main issue itself arising due to the ethical issues such as job difficulty and
preserving it. It is true that workers wish to maintain their job and that is
why they don’t stand up against the ethical issues even if they are aware of
it.
Following are the ethical issues that were identified
through the interview:
At the hospital, there is a presence of unsafe usage of equipment’s
which are quite damaging to a person a safe way is not devised. The unsafe
usage of ABG was identified as an example of such ethical issue and it was also
demonstrated that not even a single action has been taken against the issue due
to the power of upper management.
An important ethical issue that was evaluated through the
interview was the improper training given to the staff which inhibited their
growth and knowledge concerning the practices employed in the hospital. Such an
activity can actually transfer a wrong or misguided way to the staff which
might cause the staff members such as nurses to harm patients involuntarily.
The last and the most significant ethical issue that was
identified through the interview was racism. There have been cases in which a Doctor
subjected patient and the members of hospital alike through different acts of
discrimination. Although various individuals knew about it, the issue was not
probed further and sympathetic indifference was employed.
Racial discrimination of Ethical Issues in Healthcare
From
the identified ethical issues relying on the interview as the source of information, racial discrimination has been
chosen as it is a major ethical issue regardless of the industry and plays an
important role in inhibiting the performance. Those who are racially
discriminated, they are normally unable to perform well at work and often grow
different health issues. In the interview, it was identified that
discrimination is actually examined by those of higher positions towards those
of lower positions or patients i.e. Doctors towards nurses and doctors towards
patients.
Among
patients and even normal citizens, it is commonly known that doctors with their
oath are not supposed to discriminate. However, cases involving racial
discrimination are also common even in the hospital and the same can be said
about Ysbyty Gwynedd. Usually, it is the fallacious concepts and wrong
interactions with those of different color or creed that lead the person to
discriminate.
Another
reason why Doctors discriminate is not that they are racialist themselves
instead they actually are operating in a system that involves a normal routine
full of discrimination. It makes them show discriminating acts even when they
don’t have any intention of doing so. Negative associations and interactions
with wrong people usually make individuals change their perceptions and treat
all people in the same way. However,
that is not ethically right as well and needs to be resolved in such a way that
others don’t have the face the same conditions while damaging them.
A solution for eliminating racial discrimination
Although
ethical issues are very damaging but there are some solutions that can play an
important role in depleting these issues. Since the interview was conducted in
the hospital, Ysbyty Gwynedd, a solution must be modified to suit the
requirements. After all, healthcare is involved and the solution has to be
molded according to it. For resolving such solution, a system must be devised
with following key elements:
Supporting the nursing code
Raising awareness among all hospital roles
Creating a flexible environment
Bringing various disciplines in a harmony
Offering counseling services
First of all, the nursing code must be supported because
they have the major role in maintaining the treatment of patients and an open
atmosphere in the hospital. They are actually the ones who are contributing in
almost every other operation and if they are being racially discriminated, it
can disrupt their flow and how they are treating patients. It is important to
make sure that awareness concerning the racial discrimination among all the
roles of officials in the hospital. The system will not be helpful at all if
this point is missing because officials are the ones who are controlling the
whole system. It is important that they realize the density of problem and take
proper measures against it.
In the
system an environment should be developed which is flexible enough for nurses
to speak how they are being treated. Moreover, it is important that nurses
along with other staff members are being involved in significant meetings so
they can involve their own thoughts and opinions regarding the decision.
Finally, if there is still not a change in how patients and employees are being
treated, there must be a backup plan in the form of a counseling service which
doesn’t overwhelm the staff members.
What would I do if I were to face the same situation?
I have
been hearing about racial discrimination for a long time from different sources
and I have personally seen a case in which my close friend Andrew was involved.
He was racially discriminated to extreme levels and he instead of doing
something or taking a step, he downed in the depression that came with
discrimination. If I were to face the same situation and was discriminated due
to my traits, creed, or color, I would have a plan made just in case things
became erratic and the ordeal got out of the hand.
Following are the actions
that I would consider:
Consulting an official with a higher position
Gathering solid evidence and taking an action
Consulting the person directly
Consulting an official with a higher position
The very first method that I would choose if I were racially
discriminated, I would approach an official in the hospital and relay the
ethical issue. Although this solution is not considered by many but it is quite
an effective solution if the official has the power and the sensibility to
understand the situation and take steps to stop put a stop to it. I know for
sure that if I have been performing well for the period that I have been
working, I have trust of members around me and they would believe me. This is
the first solution that I would like to use and try before doing anything. I
know that the probability of success regarding this method is quite low but this
method is the easiest and I would definitely like to try it.
Gathering solid evidence and taking an action
Just in
case, the first method doesn’t work out and I have to take another action, this
one is the most important and will be like a stepping stone for the next
method. The first method is more like making a request even if it is an ethical
issue that is being talked about. This method, however, is more like taking a
direct action and observing if other members or employees are being racially
discriminated as well or not.
In
order to collect evidence, it is important to have the support of others who
have been subjected through almost the same ordeal. The best way for collecting
information against the suspect is either taking pictures or recording a video.
If someone else is going through the same experience then I will record the
video with voice as well. If I am the only victim then I will be sure to use
another source and record the voice. Now, when I have this evidence either I
can use it and take it to a higher seat holder or simply use the next method.
Consulting the person directly of Ethical Issues in
Healthcare
As I
have the evidence, I would simply go to the person who has been racially
discriminating against me. The reasonable action is to have the copy of the
evidence and use it just to tell that I have the base that I need for taking an
action and nothing is stopping me for doing so. I wouldn’t adopt an erratic or
a rash behavior as it will disrupt the whole strategy and my plan will fail
which cannot be afforded. I know for sure that it will come out as an appalling
action but if I have other suspects with me on this matter then this ethical
issue will disperse for sure.
Potential impact of Ethical Issues in Healthcare
Even
though racial discrimination has been a major issue, the measures taken against
it has not shown enough progress. There are still cases and there are still the
victims who suffer from daily discrimination based on their color, creed, and
antics. Usually, the actions taken against such issues are mild and they are
unable to produce any change other than the sympathetic indifference.
Following are the changes and potential impacts that would
be brought:
The basic system would be changed
A new system involving every worker would be created
Racial environment would be prohibited
It is actually the basis system that is harboring ethical
problems and racial discrimination and it needs to be changed. In order to
break this system that is harboring hatred, a direction action is needed and
that is what has been proposed actually. The actions will directly impact the
system and it will have to be modified. Moving to the next major effect, the
whole system would have to be recreated. After all, the actions will reveal the
real face of system and such a system would not be able to run ever again and
functionalize properly.
The new system will involve the working and opinions of all
workers as well. Without them, the system will collapse as the new system will
ensure that there is no racial discrimination against any person in the whole
hospital. The racial environment in the hospital would be impacted as well and
it will simply cease to exist and no one would have to face different acts of
discrimination.
Case against the thoughts of Ethical Issues in Healthcare
Although
I have devised the ways that I can use to stop the racial discrimination but
the probabilities are still there. Every devised solution has another outcome
as well and it needs to be addressed just in the same way. There are two
actions which can be considered as the best if the above ones fail to make
progress.
Educating others of Ethical Issues in Healthcare
It is
highly probable that I am the only one who is being discriminated upon my race,
color, and etc. If I am able to find those who are being treated in the same
manner as myself, I would try getting their help by telling just how big of a
problem this is. I would educate them and make sure that I have their support
because it will be the most important in taking a serious action. I would tell
them about the power of unity and more numbers would definitely be able to help
me in standing firm and producing a change.
Their
support would not only prevent others in the hospital from discriminating but
it will also ensure that nothing of that sort happens again.I would seek advice of Ethical Issues in Healthcare
The
other solution is seeking advice and then finding a solution through which
racial discrimination can be stopped. The situation only worsens with time and
it is important that someone else knows about my problem as well. So, I will share
my discrimination experience and get the advice which can help me along the
way. It will give me a broader way of addressing the ethical issue and devising
a solution.
Conclusion on Ethical Issues in Healthcare
It is
concluded that if there are ethical issues in hospital or any other workplace,
there must be some actions that need to be taken. In order to change the way
how the whole system is working, there have to be some well-devised actions and
solutions that need to be carried out. If such a solution is not being
produced, consulting another person can also help. Ethical issues are present
regardless of the strictness of a system and they need to be addressed. It is
better to take a serious action than enduring poor behavior and racial
discrimination. If ethical issues are solved than normal people are benefited.
