The Carlyle Group, a private equity firm, has collaborated
with investment fund focused on maritime Tiger Group Investments and some other
financiers in order to acquire the shipping assets worth over $5bn (£3.1bn). The Carlyle Group committed
over 100 million dollars to InterLink Maritime, agreeing with it to order 10
bulk carrier ships (The Carlyle Group, 2018).
The Carlyle Group and Greater China Intermodal Investments
have exited their joint venture maritime assets investor that was focused on
Asia. The Carlyle Group sold the stake of the company to partner Seaspan Corporation
based in the United States. Seaspan Corp, as per the deal with The Carlyle
Group, acquired the remaining 89% it did not own in Greater China Intermodal
Investments. Seaspan Corporation stated that an implied enterprise value of Greater
China Intermodal Investments is almost 1.6 billion dollar, along with the assumed
net debt of the third party of almost $1 billion and future vessel payments’ $140
million.
The Carlyle Group deployed approximately $900 million in
equity capital within the last few years. The Carlyle Group’s recent
acquisition in the joint venture of the entire stake in a bid to solidify the
position of the company a largest independent containership owner-operator in the
whole world. The Carlyle Group, for the deal, financed the consideration of the
cash from a balance sheet of the company (International Shipping News, 2018). Interlink Maritime
is a provider and owner of shipping companies founded by Paul Gurtler in 1979 controlling
a fleet of 28 Handysize vessels. The Interlink Maritime is owned by The Carlyle
Group in a majority, The Carlyle Group manages its assets with 174 billion
dollars of assets. Most of the private equity funds of maritime are held by The
Interlink Maritime (International Shipping News, 2018).
