The current regulations for Kansas allow the amusement parks
to select the inspector by themselves and it is also not necessary that the
inspector has to be an engineer. The engineers how are responsible for the
construction of different projects follow engineering ethics so that the
project can be delivered safe & sound. The engineers who are responsible
for the development of water slides are also bound to follow the engineering
ethics. NSPE (National Society of Professional Engineers) have established the
code of conduct which allows engineers to provide quality services. The
fundamental canons of the engineering ethics are explained as follows:
Addressing the health, safety, and welfare of the
individuals.
Provide services according to their capabilities or
according to their specified field.
Provide information to the public truthfully and an
objective manner.
The engineers should evade deceptive acts.
Perform all the activities ethically, responsibly and
lawfully (Willets, 2018).
Where engineers involved in this tragedy based on your findings are you
surprised?
It turns out that engineers did not follow the engineer
ethics which they should follow to avoid such tragedies. The first fundamental
canon of the engineering code of ethics is to focus on the welfare, health
& safety of the people. The engineers who build such an extreme ride should
think about its safety, and it seems that they did not consider the welfare of
safety while designing such an intense trip. Nobody has ever created a water
slide like this. Therefore, the engineers should focus on the safety and
provide services on the area of their competence. The engineers know that their
calculation or designed is based on a roller coaster. Therefore, the engineer
is directly involved in this tragedy (CBS, 2018).
What were the safety rules for the Verruckt were they followed when Caleb rode the slide, did they follow, being
followed?
The parks in Kansas does not hire a certified engineer for
the inspection of the rides. Kansas did not have an assessment requirement
until the year 2009. When the Kansas
state regulations are compared with other states, many issues were identified.
That is why the lawmakers in Kansas have decided to impose new regulations
which will include ride inspections, the standard for insurance and annual
inspections of the ride. The safety rule
for the amusement parks like Verruckt is to inspect the rides through a
qualified engineer. The authorities are responsible for the implementation of
safety rules. However, Kansas State was behind another state in ensuring the
safety. Therefore new rules & regulations were proposed by the lawmakers
who are the solution of the current issue (KORANDA, 2017).
In slide 7:What
role did they play,were they
adequately qualified for their position, what has happened to them,do
you agree with the tragedy?
The detail of all the key players are mentioned as follows:
Jeff Henry was the co-owner of the Schlitterbahn Waterparks
& Resorts. He was the creator of Veerruckt and does not focus on
fundamental design procedure which was necessary for designing the ride.
John Schooley was the designer of the water slide and was
not capable of designing the ride. He used the trial & error method instead
of mathematical & physics calculations and responsible for the tragedy.
John Hunsucker was the consultant of the Verruckt.
Tyler Austin Miles was the operation director of the water
part who interferes in the activity of law enforcement (Willets, 2018).
Review the 6 cannons from NSPE, of these?
Jeff Henry who is the co-owner & creator did not follow
the safety procedure which means that he breaks the first cannon that is
ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the people. Henry lack of expertise shows
that he violates the second canon as well which allow engineers to provide
services according to their competence.
John Schooley did not work professionally and did not follow the design
procedure accurately which means that it also breaks the first two fundamental
canons from NSPE. Tyler Austin Miles interfere in the investigation procedure
which says that it violates the code which asks engineers to avoid from
deceptive acts. John Hunsucker should provide the consultancy, but it seems
like it did not follow the first canon from NSPE (CBS, 2017).
In your reasons?
The Kansas state authorities are also responsible who did
not impose the regulations as the other US state does. The Kansas authorities
think about more rules after the incident happened. If the State imposed the rules
for the amusement parks before this accident than this accident might not occur
(KORANDA, 2017).
What lessons have we learned from the tragedy?
The main lesson that has been learned from this tragedy is
that a qualified engineer should construct the rides and engineer should follow
the engineering ethics to ensure the safety and welfare of the people. The
authorities must implement regulations so that rides in the parks can be
adequately inspected. This tragedy has shown that the inspection by a qualified
engineer is essential and ensures the safety of the individuals (Willets,
2018).
What should be this from ever happening again? How should engineers be involved in
waterpark design? How should safety be
enforced?
Implantation of the regulations and through proper training
of the engineers such type of incidents can be controlled in the future (Willets,
2018).
