and Disabled Seaman and has evolved all the way to the multi-million dollar
industry it is today. Although this article doesn’t focus as much on the
management side of healthcare, it still gives a lot of information on how
health services has evolved over hundreds of years. I chose to use this source
because of the amount of information that it provides on the history of the
healthcare industry. It is important to know the history behind something, such
as the healthcare industry, to truly understand how and why everything is like
it is today. This is a very credible source, as it was published within the
Encyclopedia of Science and Technology.
The source titled Career Management in Today’s Healthcare
Environment, written by Michael A. Broscio, is a scholarly article that was
published by the Journal of Healthcare Management in 2014. This article is
about how “the days of predictability of career management are over” as well as
covering the challenges that may arise during each phase of your career in
healthcare management. There are three different career phases that including
the “early careerist” phase, the “mid-level careerist” phase, and the “senior
careerist” phase. All of the research that was done for this article is based
off of a study completed by Michael A. Broscio and his team. I chose to use
this source because it shows many real world problems that commonly occur
during all phases of the average healthcare managers career. These problems are
important to be aware of because if not handled correctly they can be
detrimental to someone’s career.
The source titled Global Healthcare Workforce Management Systems
Market Forecasts And Opportunities, 2019 - Analysis Of The $1.4 Billion
Industry is a newspaper article that overviews the value of the healthcare
industry. Within the article it talks about the current value of the industry,
what the value will be in the future, and how/why the healthcare industry is
changing. According to the article, “The global healthcare workforce management
systems market is estimated to be worth $761.8million by the end of 2014 and is
expected to reach $1,453.8 million by 2019”. I chose this source because it
gives a lot of information on how big the healthcare industry has become, as
well as a look at where the industry is heading in the future.
The source titled GOOD CHANGE, written by Mark Graban, is a
popular article found within the Industrial Engineer magazine. This article is
about how healthcare organizations across the United States are beginning to follow
a Japanese practice called Kaizen. Kaizen in Japanese translates to “good
change”, and is being used to “create a culture of continuous improvement”
within the workplace. Many hospitals and organizations have began to adapt
these Japanese methods across because of the many positive effects that it has
on efficiency of the organization. It is possible to see some aspects of Kaizen
being implemented into nearly every healthcare organization in the future. I
chose this article because it gives a unique view on one of multiple different
ideologies behind creating a more efficient and effective workplace.
The source titled Medical and Health Services Managers is from
the U.S. Labor of Statistics website. This site is more specific to the actual
career of healthcare management career rather than the industry as a whole.
Some of the information included on the website includes average salaries, a
brief overview of some of the tasks and responsibilities of a healthcare
manager, information on other similar careers and much more. The U.S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics is a government website with very accurate and current information.
I chose this source because of its’ reliability and extensive information on
the actual job title of a healthcare manager rather than the industry as a
whole.
The source tilted Business Ethics and Health Care, written by
Abhijit Roy, is a reference source from the Encyclopedia of Business Ethics and
Society that covers the multiple ethical dilemmas that occur within the
healthcare industry. Some common ethical dilemmas that may occur include biases
against culture, religion, race, gender and more. Other dilemmas that may occur
include ethical pricing and promotion, selling ethical products, and more. The
healthcare industry has to be extremely careful when dealing with these biases
and dilemmas because they do not want to offend any of their customers. This
article goes on to talk about some character traits that are important to have
as a healthcare manager. I chose this article because it is important to know
how careful you have to be as a healthcare manager to remain ethical. There are
a lot of precautions that are taken with every decision that is made because
one wrong, unethical, decision can cause major problems for the organization.
The source titled A Rapidly Adaptable
Management System is an article from the Journal of Healthcare Management that shows
“the core elements of a management system”. Toussaint believes that the
management system should be continuously improving to help with communication
among employees. This article also goes on to describe how to improve
leadership by requiring leaders to approach their work and colleagues with
humility rather than autocracy within the healthcare industry. I chose to use
this source because it shows another ideology on how the healthcare industry
should be organized and led.
The source titled Healthcare Management, written by Kieran Walsh
and Judith Smith, is a textbook that overviews healthcare management as a
whole. Some of the topics that are covered within this book include healthcare
systems, services, organizations and management. There is also an abundance of
key terms scattered throughout the book that include clear and easy to
comprehend definitions. You can find almost anything you need to know about
healthcare management within this book by providing baseline information on the
field itself. I chose to use this source because it provides basic knowledge on
almost every aspect of healthcare management.
