A role of leader in any organization comes with great
challenges and even greater responsibilities. Being a leader means being a
great manager for the employees so they are motivated and look up to you. As a
leader I have a diverse team which is a great thing but there are certain flaws
that need to be encountered. The employees require a certain motivation
tailored for them. Below are how I intend to motivate employees:
Melanie is one of the people who like to procrastinate
and have very less motivation. She is determined and a valuable asset of the
organisation. She will be motivated by rewarding her with responsibilities. She
is the one who needs motivation and someone she can look up to. She will work
closely with me in order to motivate her and get the best out of her. Social
media use can be minimised by giving her work so she doesn’t get the time.
Strict laws will only deter her.
Patrick is the senior most employee in the
organisation who is motivated and wants to serve the organisation but is currently
going through a rough patch. He will be motivated by acknowledging his role and
granting him a paid leave for two weeks and a vacation to set his mind right.
This will help him de-stress and come back focused. He will be assigned his
future tasks prior so he knows he is being valued in the firm.
Tom will fill in shoes of Patrick as a challenge for
him so he can know that it is not about the money every time but the greater
purpose. He will be used as per his talents and pay scale.
The theory in practice here is Maslow’s theory of
motivation where needs are being fulfilled of the people. Melanie needs someone
to look up to and who better it can be than top tier leadership. Patrick needs
to de-stress and Tom needs to be focused. Maslow's theory focuses on hierarchy
of need and all of them fall under different categories. This is challenging
itself but not impossible and employees needs need to be catered for better
efficiency and productivity of organization.
Public sector employees need defined roles and
strategic management for successful accomplishment of goals and targets.
Leadership strategies in play would be open and encouraging recognition. I
believe in communication with employees and taking their feedback as leader.
Public needs to be served but that will be done when the workers are being
served rightly by the top management. Defined roles and goals with employees
being empowered will help the organization and part of the leadership strategy.
The key strategy will be to become an influential leader who can lead from
front and the employees follow.
Not being mindful of the leadership strategies harms
the progress of the organisation. Employees become redundant and oppose change
that is being forced to them. For example banning social media on work would
have made Melanie bitter and eventually resign. Likewise in case of Tom it was
needed that he be communicated the ethos of the organisation. Had it not being
the mindfulness these situations could have worsened.
My recommendation to the leaders of tomorrow and
currently is to be focused on goals and become a role model for the
organisation. Leaders need to communicate timely and carter their management
strategies in accordance with the employees. Concluding the essay I would say
public sector jobs are tough and may seem less rewarding but with the right
leadership strategies they can be fun and productive with proper rewards.
