Dena makes me
think about that how racism has affected the lie of the people of African
Americans, how they are being discriminated on the base of the color. What
difficulties they find during their academic session and how they complete
their studies with such difficulty. Racism has become a major problem in the
world and people are not accepted the way they are and they find difficulty in
achieving their goals. Dena describes her experience that how she has to join
the boarding school and change the city due to this discrimination. She has to
survive in different schools in different conditions. And how she has survived
in such difficult conditions with her mother and her siblings without giving up
and has stayed motivated and how she has influence other people with her
motivation and struggles and give people a new reason to live with peace. I
have identified that racism is a big issue in our society and we have to
overcome this problem as soon as possible.
What did you agree with? Explain.
I agree with her
this aspect that how motivated she was during all the struggles that she had
face in life and during her academics and due to the discrimination based on
the race and the color and how she kept studying with scholarships and achieve
the goals that she had aimed in her life and how she has overcome the race war
and proved that African Americans can be successful too and how they can cope
up with difficult situations and can prove themselves in the world. Even by living
in the difficult situation with her siblings and mother and neighbors like
this, she has become a great person and great achiever and now she is
influencing other people to achieve their goals even they belong to different
race and different culture and even they have to face the problems regarding discrimination
but they have to remain motivated and achieve their respective goals.
What did you disagree with? Explain
I have disagree
with her this perspective that how she has leave her area and move to a new
city to get the education, she should stay there and get the education, she
should be strong enough to face the people in her surroundings and she should
cope up with the problems and the difficult situations, because she is used too
that place and she is familiar with her surrounding and the people living in
the Bronx, if she had to leave Bronx to get a good education, this will have
negative impacts because she is going into a whole new environment with
different people, different environment and different cultures. And she had to
face new problems because moving to a new place means facing new problems and
more struggles and you have to be familiar with the environment first, then you
can move into the environment and know how to deal with the situations.
According to Chimamanda, what is the danger
of a single story?
According to Chimamanda
she lives in Nigeria and was fond of reading the books, she was reading
American books and had a visions that in the world all people are white Americans
but until she comes across the African books and came to know that different
people with different color tones and different physical appearance exists in
the world. According to her, the dangers of a single story is that you might
come across a single perception about a thing and you thinks about that thing
with that single perception but on the other hand you don’t know that that
thing has many different perceptions. Every story has different sides and
different perspectives but when you listen a single story about a person, place
or a thing again and again you believe that this is reality without looking at
the their side of the story and seeing the other perception.
Do you agree? Why or Why not?
I agree with
Chimamanda that single story has dangers because when a person sees only a
single side of the story, and think of it has reality, he has developed a wrong
perception about a people, place or a thing and from now onwards this
perception will stay in his mind and he will not have a broader perspective
about the world, his thinking will be limited and he cannot think positively
with broader view. A single story creates stereotypes and the main problem with
the stereotypes is that they are not true and not real, they are incomplete
with just one side of the story. The danger of a single story is that they make
one story and this one story became the only story that most of the people
believe until they meet the person or had visited the place or had explored the
thing on which the story has been developed.
What is your understanding of an anti-bias
curriculum?
I have
understood that an anti-bias curriculum should be introduced in different
schools because this is an activist approach and this will brought a change in
the school systems and their curriculum and will attempt to challenge the prejudices;
the sexism, racism, homophobia, ageism and ableism. This will eliminate
discrimination from the world and this will develop value based principals and
also develop some methods to support and embrace the different races and
different cultures without any biasness and unfairness. This will develop a
sense of equality between people belonging to different cultures and different
societies and they can participate equally in different activities without any
hindrance based on racism. The students will be able to understand the
differences and will be respectful to all the people belonging to different
races.
Do you think it is important for educators
to teach young children about diversity and inclusion? Why or Why not?
It is important
to teach the educators to teach young children about diversity and inclusion
because it is necessary to educate about different people, different cultures,
different tradition and different races so that they can appreciate every
person with different color and different race and do not do any discrimination
among the different persons on the base of color, race, tradition and culture.
In this way the children will respect every child whether they belong to any
culture. This will develop a sense of acceptance in the children and later on
they will be able to eliminate racism from the World and because our young
\generation I our bright future and all depends upon them, so this will
encourage the students to learn about diverse societies and cultures and they
will be have more knowledge about the different people and they will overcome
this rising problem of racism.
