It
is a very important thing to keep in mind for medical staff to ensure that they
come up with a practice, which is culturally compatible with the culture of the
patient, who is being admitted. People from different cultural and religious
backgrounds may behave differently in particular situations due to their values
and belief. It is also critical for medical staff to realize that cultural
competence is vital to provide quality healthcare services. For instance, the
19-year-old being admitted due to fever is from the Muslim faith, and then
medical staff should understand that Muslim people value and respect their
elders in decision making. The family members should be consulted before taking
any decision regarding treatment for the patient. Moreover, the people from
Muslim faith also like to use herbal and natural medicines, so when such patient
is given a prescription of medicine, they should be explained about each
medicine that why it is prescribed by the doctor, and why it is necessary to
take it on regularly as per instructions. These are a few tips for any medical
staff when they deal with patients coming from different cultures. Like medical
staff may allow a glass of wine to a Jewish patient, but they cannot offer wine
to a Muslim patient as wine is prohibited in their religion.
After
analyzing the background of the patients; she can be given help through the
medical support system so that there should be no problems and patients can be
treated according to the religious or cultural value. There is a health care
support system “Medicaid” available for Muslim patients in my community.
Medicaid believes in providing equal opportunities to all the patients and
there is a support to people with different cultural backgrounds. The patients
are given values based on their culture or faith. There are also benefits for
elderly adults, low-income adults, children, etc. according to federal
requirements, Medicaid is administered by states.
