Teaching in a classroom with
students with emotional disabilities was quite challenging for me. It is
obvious that I could not expect the same response from them as a type of
response that I would get from normal students. However, teaching these types
of students has given me an extraordinary and valuable experience as a teacher
that I would never forget. Some of the students really got my attention during
my teaching there.
The first student that I have
observed in the classroom named Brandon. He has presented his emotional
disability with his hyperactive behaviors in the classroom. For almost the
whole duration where I presented my lesson in the classroom, he was disturbing
other students by visiting them only to distract them by taking their book and
throw it out on the floor. In addition to this, Brandon was also disturbing
everyone by screaming loud if none of us pay attention to him. Thus, he was not
only disturbing the other students, but he was also distracting me from
presenting my lectures because most of the time, I had to calm him down when he
was screaming so that other students could hear what I taught them.
The second student that I have
observed and got my attention was Sara. She was not presenting any hyperactive
behaviors as opposed to what Brandon did. Instead, she was showing a sad face
and silently cried the whole day in the classroom. When I came to ask her what
has happened, then she will start to cover up her face with her hands and whipping.
I was really curious about what had made her act like that, but every time I
tried to come closer, she seemed to avoid me by doing the same thing. Hence,
all I could do was continue my lesson while still observing her from a
distance, in case if she would have cried.
The third student that attracted
me was Michael. He was quite disturbing another student who sat next to him
with whispering some words on his ears. I didn't really know what did he say to
another student, but he kept on doing this behavior the whole day. However, he
was quite smart to hide it from me. Every time I saw him start to whisper
something, then he would stop it and pretended that he was listening to me
seriously. Then, when I moved my attention away from him, then he would start
his disturbing behavior again.
