Allan McDonald
act ethically because he warned the Launch Control center of NASA and as well
as he refused to sign the recommendation for the launch of the rocket because
of the safety concerns because he was concerned about the people who were in
the rocket ad also about the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger because
it can cause so much damage. Allan McDonald try to prevent the accident but and
he act ethically but he might can prevent the accident because McDonald was lacking
hard evidence to show it to the NASA, if he had the hard evidence than he can
prevent the accident. By looking at the code of ethics, two code of ethics will
be applied in this situation; “to improve
the understanding by individuals and society of the capabilities and societal
implications of conventional and emerging technologies, including intelligent
systems” and “to maintain and improve
our technical competence and to undertake technological tasks for others only
if qualified by training or experience, or after full disclosure of pertinent
limitations”. These are the code of ethics which are applied in this
situation because Allan McDonald can improve the understanding of the people
working at NASA and also improves their technical competence s that they can
understand the technological tasks and it will enhance the capabilities of the
persons to earn about the implications of the emerging technologies so that in
future no such incident or problem might occur.
2. Could Morton-Thiokol have prevented the
accident? Did they act ethically?
Morton-Thiokol
Incorporation has manufactured the booster rocket for the NASA Company, which cause
the Space shuttle challenger to explode and due to this explosion seven
astronauts were killed and there was a loss of million dollars. Morton-Thiokol
can prevent this accident from occurring because the engineers which have made
the rocket booster, know its consequences sooner or later before the launch of
the Space Shuttle Challenger and the four engineers working together have warned
the NASA about the consequences but NASA has pressurized the mangers of the
Morton-Thiokol to keep their manager hats on and let them do what they want to
do. And by overruling the warning of the engineers, the managers in the
Morton-Thiokol told NASA o go ahead and launch the Space Shuttle Challenger and
after the launching of the Space Shuttle Challenger, right after 73 seconds to
explodes and seven astronauts died at the spot. The Morton-Thiokol Incorporation
act unethically and risk the life of the seven astronauts. They can prevent
this accident and can save the life of the people as well as the loss which has
occurred due to this incident. The incorporation could think more ethically and
more intellectually before taking any step and before risking the lives of
people. All this occurs due to the fault of Morton-Thiokol Incorporation
because they don’t want to create a bad impact of their organization in the
market and don’ want to be in loss.
Companies often want to have the public see
their company in only in a positive light. Why does the truth matter?
Companies often
want to have the public to see their company in the positive light because,
they want their organization to have a positive impact on the people and in
different markets so that they can be more successful and can have more standards
in the market. But hiding the flaws of the organization and covering up the
truth is very harmful for the organization in the future because the
organization don’t want to see its flaws and weaknesses, but a company must look
over its flaws and weaknesses and overcome it because these problems might
create some serious situations in the Future. Truth is a necessary element
because by speaking the truth and overcoming all the deficiencies the company
will be able to accept the flaws and will be able to succeed in the market
because covering up and hiding the flaws is a crime and later on these crimes
are opened up in front of the public and the company has to face much loss but
if the organization is honest and speak the truth to its customers and
employees then it can safe itself from the consequences and can stay in the market
for a long time otherwise the lie cannot be hidden for a long time and later on
the consequences are faced. So companies must focus on truth and honesty rather
than faking up and hiding the flaws. The Morton-Thiokol must be truthful and
honest to the NASA so that they can prevent the accident from happening and
will not be banned in the future.
