The self-managed or self-directed learning and approach can be described as a method in which individuals use the number of methods to improve the skills and become able to adjust in a diversified environment. In simple words, self-managed learning is a continuous process of updating the existing knowledge. Both terms of self-managed learning and self-directed learning demonstrate the same theme. Apart from the learning it also considers observation, self-study, researching, and self-assessment. The ongoing learning, as well as professional development, is necessary to enable a person to adopt new realities and new changes.   With such kind of attributes, one can more flexible towards part-time working arrangements, it provides new opportunities, unable to deal with job insecurity. Continuity in the ongoing learning and professional development is important to ensure that a person is competent to the profession (Weiss, Nolan, Hunsinger, & Trifonas, 2007).  

Importance of ongoing professional development

The importance of self-managed learning and ongoing professional development is mentioned below,

It helps in becoming efficient and strengthening the skills

It enables a person to learn more about the field of interest and get more information about the selected field

Extensively used method to improve self-managed learning and ongoing professional development is to have intensive information through the newspaper, internet, seminar, and conferences (Ellaway, 2005; Barajas, 2003).

My skills and competencies to meet the expectation of the employer

I am focusing to develop an attitude of listening to others with full concentration and acquire knowledge from their conversation. This attitude will enable me to learn more about the attitudes of skilled employee and more knowledge about my field of interest. In free time I prefer to listen to a podcast related to motivational speeches, personal development, listening to others, taking knowledge from the seniors, and learning from previous experiences. I am focusing to improve my communication skills. I have analyzed that most often I learn the things in a better way if I have quality time to spend on myself or if I am alone. There are multiple ways and strategies to improve knowledge and skills, but I prefer to learn from the internet, reading books, having a valuable discussion with my friends, and by attending conferences and seminars of professional development and interpersonal skills. I consider conferences as a good source of knowledge and skills, but it requires a power of concentration on the facts and attitudes of successful people. I conduct self-assessment on a regular basis in which I evaluate my skills. I have identified the areas in which I need to crack myself and to develop more skills. I need to improve time management and presentation skills so I will be able to present my work and skills in a more professional attitude. Simply time management is essential to make myself a responsible person. By having a proper investment of time on my skills I have improved my interpersonal skills. Now I can convince people by providing my information efficiently and confidently. I believe that my improvement in skills and knowledge would ultimately lead to success.

In the present section, I have selected Emirates airline as an Organization in which I want to work to improve my current skills and competencies along with professional standards. My interest and objectives with the professional life are aligned with objectives of Emirates airline, therefore, I would prefer to improve my skills and competencies to the professional standards of the selected company.

Objectives of Emirates airline of Personal identity and practice

Improve as well as retain the market shares of business class

By the end of 2019 improve the market share from 40 % to 55%

Improve the services of the low-cost carrier market and achieve higher investment on return

Promote the tourism activities of Dubai with the positioning statement as " the finest in the sky".

According to the financial year 2013 and 2014 statistics, Emirates cargo reached 2.25 million tonnes with 44.5 million passengers (Weiss, Nolan, Hunsinger, & Trifonas, 2007).

I selected Emirates airlines to find my dream career of Human Resource Manager. Nowadays human resource manager is considered as a skilled job which required exact competencies and skills. Under these considerations not only skills but it requires aptitude and knowledge to deal and tackle the issues in the company. The main skills required for human resource manager are listed below

Counselling skills

Time management skills

People management skills

Work supervision skills

Analytical and interpersonal skills to solve the problems

Effective negotiation and communication skills

Information Technology skills

Work supervision skills

Administration skills

All the skills mentioned above are highly required for a human resource manager to manage the issues and people according to yield out the goals of the company. Besides others, the effective supervisor skills are essentially required to improve the discipline, staff facilities, training and development, and to align the goals of the team with the company goals. An HR manager is responsible to maintain the level of staff and handle the issues related to the management and counselling skills. I analyzed that strong and effective strategies are required to tackle the issues. The administration skills include the handling of documents, managing the HR information system, and upholding of personal files (Weiss, Nolan, Hunsinger, & Trifonas, 2007).

Counihan (2009) researched internet usage for the support of different learning systems including the virtual learning environment, online resources and distance learning, and computer-managed learning (Barajas, 2003). Cottrell (2010) worked on human capital development and concluded that each individual can amplify their creative skills, enhance their performance, and improve their potential. Throop and Castellucci (2009) worked on the conditions and showcasing of economy, in his research he concluded that learning skills are important for to improve the economy and sales of business (Ellaway, 2005).

Besides these skills, the skill of solving the problems is an important factor that the HR manager is supposed to demonstrate in day to day work issues. Before considering my career in Human Resource Management it is important to analyses my strength and weaknesses. My strengths include the ability to listen to others, quick learner, experience in HR management, good communication and interpersonal skills. On the contrary, my weaknesses are a problem in presenting the solutions, unable to manage the pressure of work, suddenly take an emotional decision, and unable to move towards the remote areas because of some family commitments. Before I could start my work as an HR manager in Emirates Airlines, it is important to manage a plan that will enable me to overcome my weaknesses (Weiss, Nolan, Hunsinger, & Trifonas, 2007).

A manager has to demonstrate courage and confidence in taking steps and a sense of accomplishing the purpose.   I strongly believe if all the skills I mentioned above are developed in me by continue struggling I will be able to deal with the issues and to solve the problems faced by Emirates Airlines. The subordinates and group members will work under me and they will be well aware of their roles. Several tools will be used to support the learning, for instance, computer-managed learning and virtual learning environment.
