It is a well-known fact that politics is an important
tool for people to get their rights with the help of power, which they can have
due to political advancements. So, it is quite important to strengthen the
political participation of women because women are actually marginalized in
every field of life including politics. There are different factors in every
part of the world, which restricts women from taking part in a dynamic field
like politics. Some parts of the world have cultural barriers, some have
educational barriers, and some of the regions lack resources, capacity and
willingness to help women to grow in their lives. The majority of societies are
male-dominated societies, where women are oppressed in every aspect. They are
not allowed to make decisions about their lives from early childhood, and their
fate is decided by the men in the family. If the world has to achieve gender
equality at any level, then it is imperative to ensure that women participation
in the politics is welcomed and encouraged, and they are given equal
opportunities to grow like men as political leaders, otherwise, the goals and
objectives to end gender inequality would never be achieved (DiLanzo, 2016)
It is important to see what challenges women face in the
developing world, which not only hinders their political participation but also
lowered their performance if they are somehow able to participate in the
country’s politics. It is great to see a relevant research study, which has
examined the issue with relevant challenges as well as opportunities in
Ethiopia, a third world country. The main objective of the study was to analyze
what kind of challenges as well as opportunities are there for Ethiopian women
with regards to politics in their country. Afte
analyzing a variety of secondary research data, considerable findings
were made. The results showed that there are different elements, which play their
part in a lower level of political participation such as cultural, social,
religious as well as economic elements. These elements are creating great
challenges for Ethiopian women to choose politics as their career path. But the
results of the study also came with some considerable opportunities as well. It
was found that if women are allowed to participate in politics, then they are
better able to address their concerns and issues regarding women’s rights and
equality. The political participation allows them to participate in the
decision-making process, where they can make laws which ensure and promote
gender equality in every field of life (Kassa, 2015)
If an effort is made to look at different causes behind
the inefficiency of female politicians to perform well for their own rights,
then there would be so many things to discuss in this regard. The female
politicians are not able to make a considerable influence because they are
still dependent on reserve quotas and seats to get representation in the forums
like parliaments. For instance, if a woman comes into the parliament or any
law-making body with the help of her political party, who gives her the
reserved seat, then what options a female politician has? Can she go against
the line taken by her own party; can she differ from the decisions of her
party? And answer to these questions would be “no” because she has no moral
authority to do so. The seat is given to her by the party, and if she would
disagree with her party, then she may lose her seat, and it may be given to
someone else who is ready to remain in the decorum of the political party. So,
what does it mean? It means that women are not given a full opportunity to
exercise their political powers, because their participation is not made on the
parameters of men, rather they are given political favors, and so women don’t
have enough things in their hands. This is
how women are restricted, whereas a more nuanced approach is needed, if
women have to make part of political decision-making process (Slaughter &
Binda, 2018)
It is important to understand that the developed world
is still struggling with the issue of gender inequality, and it has been a hard
path to walk for them in terms of increasing gender equality in every field of
life. The overall issue is the mindset of society. The society has many issues
with regards to females because they're brought up is done differently as
compared to men. Different gender roles are assigned to girls from their early
age, which is the beginning of disparity between men and women. The girls are
not allowed to certain things, which men are allowed to do. Seemingly, females
are not welcomed to embrace certain fields, whereas men do not face such kind
of issues. Moreover, male dominant societies are another bigger cause of gender
inequality because men are considered superior to women in so many ways.
If stakeholders are looking to deal with the issue of
gender inequality so that gender gaps can be decreased and more gender equality
is brought in, then they will have to look at the cause of the problem. One big
cause is the patriarchal mindset, which oppresses women in so many ways. It has
been observed that women do face issues in the sports field and resisted by the
patriarchal ideology, which stops them to openly participate in different kind
of sports. It is true that things have improved a lot when the past is analyzed
because the situation was too bad. Now, various improvements have been made in
all parts of the world because women are being encouraged to participate in
every sphere of life. The women are joining different fields such as sports or
aviation, which was male-dominated. But this change and growth are extremely
slow, and if significant results have to be taken, then big measures would have
to be taken in this regard. All the stakeholders have to sit together and
derive a policy on local as well as the global level that how to promote women in every field including
politics because they are a large section
of the society,
and their ineffective contribution is a burden for society Such a huge section
of society should be utilized as much as possible (Burnett, 2018)
Conclusion and Recommendations of The Progress of
Female Politicians in Advancing the Women’s Equality
It is important to know each and every aspect and issue
associated with gender inequality for women, and how it has affected their
participation in politics. After analyzing different resources, research
studies as well as real-world evidence, it can be said that the issue of gender
inequality is still persisting in society with large numbers, and no
significant improvements have been made yet. The developed world is still
dealing with the issue of gender inequality and women have not been able to make
considerable representation in politics. One big fact is that the White House
has never hosted a female president in history, which shows the mindset of the
society as well as the severity of the issue. So, the situation is even worst
in the developing world, that’s why women are not able to get viable roles in
the political arena, and if they do get any considerable roles, still they are
not able to perform well for their own issues such as women’s rights and gender
inequality. If the world has to improve the political participation of women
and include them in every field of life, then serious measures should be taken.
It is a recommendation that every country should make laws, which promote
gender equality. Women are encouraged in every field of life, and their
participation should be made necessary.
