This article has
provided analytical reviews and also has discussed about how English as an
International Language or known as EIL has been considered as an option to the
out-of-date styles of English as a Foreign Language or known as EFL, in
addition to English as a Second Language or ESL. In this article, the author
has proposed that the structure of English as an International Language is
measured as a valuable alternative subject to discuss in the Colombian context.
Furthermore,
the authors have also stated that in the context of immigrant populations, the
out-of-date or traditional model of English as a Second Language or ESL refers mostly
to the United States and some other countries that use English as their common and
daily language. The main goal here is to offer all the learners the necessary
instruments to join in the community and speak in English in a daily basis. In
this framework, the citizenships along with the civil education have a
significant and fundamental role to influence the curriculum.
The most
interesting part of this article is when the author has mentioned clearly that
none of the models provided (ESL, EFL, or EIL) have approved their value in
English utilization in the universal environment settings, in which the social
and cultural combination are not placed as the core in English learning. The
reason is due to the nature or origin of linguistic interactions is, to some
extent, quite diverse, and for this reason, there is a requirement to acquire
the norms of native speakers which still less applicable.
Furthermore,
the author has also purpose that the main motive of people who encourage
English as an International Language or EIL is mostly the English users who are
eventually not act as the native speakers of the language itself. This
condition definitely requires for a real conceptualization of what the real
definition of English is, along with the perception that those native speakers
must be regarded as the standard, principle, and norm which intended to be used
in English teaching together with all its methodologies and theories.
The author has
concluded that this dispute must be used to lead the communities in considering
whether there are any types of specificities to the assortment of English
language which has spoken by the Colombian that would be legitimized. Thus, it
is completely depend on the officials and decision-makers to manage this
matter.
