It
all started when Sheikh Mohammed rented two airplanes from PIA or Pakistan
International Airlines. By the end of the 1970s, open sky policy was announced
by Sheikh Mohammed for attracting airlines. The objective was to enhance the
competition and open several other sectors in the economy. Gulf Air was
concerned that other airlines would benefit from the policy and its problems
with Gulf Air increased significantly.
They
asked Sheikh Mohammed to end the policy of open sky in order to protect their
shares in the market. A few weeks were given for announcing it and they also
threatened to withdraw from the national airport. The policy could never end as
it was quite important to the economy and a dead-end was reached due to which
flights to Dubai were decreased significantly. It was in 1984 when Sheikh
Mohammed invited Dnata’s manager. His name was Maurice Flangan and with him,
Sheikh Mohammed discussed the dream that he always possessed.
Sheikh
Mohammed wanted to create an airline in Dubai.
Considering
the fact that Maurice was a field expert, he created a team and offered a plan
as well. The team suggested that Dubai Air should be the name of airline.
However, His Highness suggested that the name should be Emirates Airlines and
the UAE flag should be put on the aircraft.
The
team also suggested that 10 million dollars should be invested in the project. Collectively,
they had six months for launching the airline and that was when two planes were
rented from PIA.
At
the moment, people know Emirates Airlines as one of the best to fly around
nations. In 2018, the revenue for the company was 28 billion dollars and it
also has over 260 planes. On an annual basis, over 60 million people travel
through the airline.
