What
do we imagine when we think about traveling 50 years ago? We think about a
colorful and memorable travel experience. However, the reality was quite
different.
Costly
The
first and most important difference between flying today and the Golden Age of
Flying is that traveling was costly. At present, traveling is quite cheap
because of the presence of low-cost airline. In contrast, the same cannot be
said about the 1950s because the cost for every ticket was very high. And in
the 1950s, an average person would pay up to almost five percent of his annual
salary for flying across a specific area.
In
the Golden Age, it was approximately five times as costly to fly. And for a
secretary, a short flight might have cost the salary of a month. It was indeed
very tough to fly and have an affordable experience.
Dangerous
and Scary
And
what did you even get after paying such amount to fly? Just a greater chance of
dying due to an accident. It is not uncommon information that air carriers
during the Golden Age were not safe to travel on. In fact, there was always a
risk of accident. These days, you don’t need to worry about safety. Mostly, it
is due to advancements in technology.
Boring
Once
you don’t find anything interesting out of the window, you will find yourself
drowning in your boredom. After all, there is nothing to do but just sit in a
droning metal tube for a lot of time. Today, there is no need for such a thing.
In fact, there are a lot of options which we can consider to occupy ourselves. For
instance, at least we have our smartphones or laptops to occupy us when we
don’t have anything else to do.
