Human
personality and specific characteristics draw an impact on the leadership
skills of a person. Personality develops from external experiences of a person
in the society, at the workplace, and in the educational institutes. The
self-analysis portfolio is based on my self-analysis regarding leadership
skills, personality attributes, and management skills. In the portfolio, information
collected from the questionnaire and personality quiz is presented in detail.
Moreover, self-analysis portfolio will cover four main dimensions which include
career history, personality attributes, managerial competency profile, and
leadership styles. Followed by these sections whole discussion is concluded and
summarized in the conclusion section.
Career History
of Self-Analysis Portfolio
It
can be seen that career history has a huge impact on the business of the
person. The reason is that if career history is fine and perfect, then it will
help any individual to gain confidence and also the courage to move on.
At
the start, I have learned many new things that are extremely important for my
future. When I was in school, I had a task that my teacher gave me was related
to management. I just need to manage all things for the entire class so that
they are able to take benefit from that plan. But at that time, I have no idea
how to manage the class in a proper way. So I had faced huge failure in
management. Then after some time, I started to learn many new things from
others.
My
teachers were extremely cooperative with me and gave me a lot of information
related to management skills. But there is still a need to gain much experience
in that field. Later on, I moved towards the high school. At that time, I
started to use strategic management skills to complete the required tasks. Then
after this, I was able to manage these tasks in a perfect way. Now I got an
extreme level of confidence and started to do similar tasks that are related to
management. Now at that time, I gained a lot of interest in the field of
management. Then I decide I must have to go to the management field.
The
main reason is that I thought that I was able to handle some things easily.
After that time, I go for that field and then started to manage different thing
in a proper way. But at that time, I had one huge problem of low patience. My
patience level was extremely low. Due to this, I started to make huge mistakes
and also unable to manage new tasks in a proper way. After that time, I
realized that I have to go for some changes in my personality. The main reason
was that it would help me in the future in regulating all tasks in a proper
way. For that problem, I started to give proper time to each task. I just have
to increase the level of steadiness, and this will help me to increase my
confidence level for the future in the field of management. When I was in high
school, I started to steady myself. The main reason was that it would help me
to control my emotions and also my nervousness.
It
can be seen that during the pressure condition, it is extremely difficult to
handle any task in a proper way. At that time, an individual will make huge
mistakes and also unable to make changes in those particular tasks. For
handling the pressure, there is a need for steadiness skills in the
personality. If a person had such skills, then it will be extremely easy for
him to handle such a condition. For that skill, I started to evaluate myself in
a critical way. But the main problem is that I was not facing such a problem
that will test my steadiness. I thought that I was able to manage everything
without any nervousness and anxiety. But I was totally wrong. The main reason
was that at that time, I had not faced such pressure conditions. So how could I
be able to evaluate that in a proper way? There is a need for such a condition
where I am able to prove myself.
For
that condition, I had joined the company as an internee. I thought that from
that internship, I was able to learn new things for the future. But I had done
an internship in that company for about 4 months, but I was unable to face such
pressure conditions where my steadiness level is tested in an essential
way.
Then
from that time, I started to join a company. My aim was that I just wanted to
prove to them they had hired a perfect manager for that organization. From the
start day, I worked there with proper dedication and gain attention and fame
from all staff members. Then after 2 years, I switched from that organization
to another for the sake of experience. But the main problem was the nature of
work was totally different. But in that place,
I
have tested my steadiness skills in a proper way. I was given a lot of unique
situations where it was extremely high pressure in handling the entire
condition and also managing all tasks. The thing was that at that time, I just
remain calmed and relax and manage all of my tasks in an essential way. In that
organization, my management skills were tested in a proper way. In the started,
I faced a lot of problems that started. I don’t know how to handle the pressure
and stay calm.
But
as time passes, I gained a lot of experience and confidence regarding pressure
handling. This is just because of that pressure test in that particular
organization. From that, I have analyzed that I can easily able to manage my
tasks under swear pressure. I am able to balance it in a proper way. Then I
joined the multinational organization. In that company, there is a totally
unique nature of work, and also the intensity of load is also high, but I can
say that it will polish my skills and give me more confidence.
Personality Attributes of Self-Analysis Portfolio
In
this section, I have presented my areas of strength and major weaknesses supported
by the information I obtained from my self-assessment. Furthermore, the
information presented in this section is also supported by the theories and
concept I learned in my course lectures. According to my information collected
from the lectures, individual behaviour refers to what a person does and person
in a certain situation or how a person deal with something. Individual
behaviour gets influence from the individual variables such as demographic
variables, the background of the person, and abilities and skills. Abilities
and skills can be mental as well as physical. For instance, my self-analysis
shows that I have good mental skills or abilities in problem-solving and stress
handling. Thus, on my individual behaviour, my skills and abilities have a
direct impact.
My
performance in situation handling and finding an appropriate solution for each
issue has also improved my learning skills. In accordance with my results of
self-analysis, my performance is improved and I can perform the role of the
leader in a better way as I can manage stress and solve problems with my mental
abilities. My individual behaviour is also influenced by other individual
variables such as family background, affiliation with social class and life
experiences. Excluding, this personally attributes are also influenced by
psychological variables such as learning, motivation and attitudes (Haslam,
Reicher, & Platow, 2010). According to my
results of self-analysis questionnaires and tests, my strength is stress
management, problem-solving, and competitiveness. In the light of
self-analysis, I can declare myself as a type “A” personality type. I want
public recognition and self-recognition in my family and friends circle. I have
a strong forceful personality that encourages me to dominate in every situation
and lead in the front row.
Although,
I also feel restless when not active and does things quickly which indicate
that I have a “type A” personality. Furthermore, the results of the personality
dimension questionnaire and test show that my personality falls in the category
of extravert and stable. Following lectures on personality dimensions,
extraverted personality-oriented people with stability usually live carefreely
and rarely take stress and tension of problems and social issues. Talkative,
outgoing, and responsive people fall in this category of extravert stable.
While on the other hand, extravert unstable people can be restless, changeable,
active, touchy, excitable, and impulsive.
However,
my self-evaluation conclude that my personality attributes and qualities relate
to the qualities of extravert stable people. Leadership and management skills
are my strength and potential which directly relate to sanguine personality (a
combination of extraverted and stable personality). Self-analysis also suggests
that my behaviour is pro-social as it is supportive of harmonious and
productive social relations. Among my social circle, I am considered as an
open-minded, stable, tolerant, and warm person who has enough strength of
encouraging other people to do something right at the right moment. Additionally,
the behaviour of nurturing and empowering other people also make a pro-social
person. Apart from these strengths and potential, there are some areas in my
personality which need improvement. For instance, during self-analysis, I found
that my communication skills are not enough strong.
In
this competitive world, effective communication skills are essential to get a
better career opportunity in the area of leadership and management. To be
recruited as a leader or manager in an organization I must have to bring
improvement and ensure further development of my communication skills. Moreover,
my pro-social behaviour focused on nurturing, empowering, and encouraging
because of stable, open-minded, calm, and tolerant personality characteristic
my overall behaviour is more democratic as compare to autocratic. Democratic
behaviour is considered as an effective and appropriate behaviour in the
organizations for the managerial positions.
However,
extreme democratic behaviour presents a low authoritarian personality. Thus, in
this point of view, managers also must have to focus on autocratic behaviour
sometimes to increase authority on employees and subordinates. Considering
this, I also need to have brought improvement in my pro-social behaviour to
some extent. For instance, sometimes I should have aggression, hostility, and
anger. Therefore, autocratic behaviour included at some extent in my overall
personality will result in the increase of authoritative behaviour which is
essential for a leader or managers to deal appropriately with the followers
while working on a specific job.
Managerial Competency Profile
In this section, the analysis of the managerial
competency profile is presented in detail with reflection. Information
collected from the management competency questionnaire and self-evaluation
based on the managerial capabilities is also presented in this section. Additionally,
course material and lecture content are also discussed here to support ideas
and opinions about managerial competency profile.
Organizational
psychologists have presented some characteristics of an individual person that
can be used as supportive indicators to measure and evaluate leadership and
management competency. The four characteristics are influence, steadiness,
competence, and dominance. Influence is highly important in the development of management
and leadership in a person. People having the characteristic of influence can
better motivate and encourage other people which makes them a better leader or
manager. Evaluating my managerial competency profile, it can be concluded that
I need to have the characteristic of influence in my personality. Influence characteristic
should be developed in my personality by improvement in communication skills. Excluding
this, in managerial competency profile, other important characteristics of
leadership and management are dominance.
Current
analysis shows that my personality is assertive and dominating as I contract
with obsequious individuals and submissive. Moreover, in my core competencies developing
and evaluating issues in the big picture can be supportive for me to be a
successful manager or leader in future. Although, I also need to work more on
this core competency to refine my managerial skills and capabilities. Steadiness
is also required for the development of managerial skills and competency. Self-evaluation
of my personality and managerial competencies I found my strength in
steadiness. My high level of steadiness helps me control my nervousness and
anxiety when things go wrong or cause issues. In my opinion, managers and
leaders must have steadiness to deal with uncertain situations and conflicts
without losing their self-control, temperament and patience. Continue to this, steadiness
can also make me clam when uncertainties cause nervousness and anxiety.
Additionally,
emotional intelligence measurement also plays an important role in evaluating
leadership and managerial competence of a person. Four major themes of
emotional intelligence are social, social skills, self-management, and
self-awareness. Self-analysis shows that my emotional intelligence relates to
the category headed by social management and management with a raw score of
3.11. In this category, my emotional intelligence relates to effective
teamwork, collaboration, mentoring, and building relationship. My personality
is enough flexible to get an adjustment in any social group thus relationship
building in the social circle is quite easy for me. Moreover, personality
strengths associated with extravert qualities are also supportive for me in
social relationship building and managing emotional intelligence properly (Keith, 2019).
In the emotional intelligence testing, my
scores for the self-control and discipline was more than 50%. While integrity
and trustworthiness were the second dominating variables in my personality.
Additionally, test scores presented that I have medium level creativity and
flexibility. Over score indicate that I am following self-management model in
emotional intelligence which requires further improvement to reach social
recognition model in emotional intelligence. My course material and lecture
notes have drawn my attention towards this weakness and area of improvement.
Therefore, to be a successful manager and leader in future I have to bring
improvement in my emotional intelligence capabilities.

6 domain Cluster based classification system of Self-Analysis Portfolio
6 domain cluster based
classification system is based on factor grouping which includes strategic
& organization wide competences, networking competencies, problem solving
and decision making competencies, team leadership competencies, administrative
& operational competencies, and personal management competencies. These
competency clusters have the various number of competence elements. These 6
domains are presented below in this section in brief detail to relate my
self-analysis findings with these domains:
1.
Leadership and team-building of Self-Analysis Portfolio
The first domain cover
elements such as individual consideration, motivating others, building teams,
facilitating group interaction and building team morale. Considering
self-analysis, building team, facilitating the group’s interaction and
individual consideration are core elements related to my personality.
2.
Strategic management and future orientation of Self-Analysis Portfolio
The domain has focused on
behavioural characteristics and elements such as effective risk-taking,
analytical capacity, environmental awareness, and managing change. My
personality is mainly focused on managing change and analytical capacity.
However, I need to have a focus on effective risk-taking to learn strategies
and develop behaviour regarding control of risk factors as a manager in future.
3.
Personal management competencies of Self-Analysis Portfolio
Personal integrity,
enthusiasm, self-awareness, and tolerance of ambiguity are the key focused
areas by the domain of personal management competencies. The evaluation
suggests that my personal management competencies are high although a focus on
improvement can turn this domain into my competitive advantage.
4.
Problem-solving and Decision Making of Self-Analysis Portfolio
Regarding this domain, my
personality mainly relates to the evaluation of alternatives, accurate problem
diagnosis, and problem-solving ability.
5.
Political skills, influence, and persuasion of Self-Analysis Portfolio
Identifying opportunities,
forging an alliance, and participating in meetings relates to this domain.
Being an effective manager in future I also need to have a focus on this domain
and further develop strength relevant to this domain.
6.
Administrative and Operations Management of Self-Analysis
Portfolio
In
this domain, the key focus is on operational scheduling, facilities
maintenance, inventory administration and productivity monitoring. An
administrator and operations manager should have a focus on all these areas to
control the cost of operations and maximize the overall profitability of the
company. Thus, to be a successful manager in future I would also require to
develop strength in the operations management and administrative activities
such as sales, advertisement, knowledge of accounting, and operational
scheduling regarding all major activities to be done in the organizations (Amanchukwu, Stanley, & Ololube, 2015).
From
lecture notes and course materials I learned that I have to acquire
competencies of an effective leader and manager by following the sequential
competency acquisition. The process of acquisition would start by learning
stress management and time management. Then in the next step, the focus is
required on coaching and motivating. The third step relates to the practising
operational leadership domain which covers network building and strategic
leadership.
Leadership Style of Self-Analysis Portfolio
Following course material and analysis, some common
leadership styles include a democratic leadership style, autocratic leadership
style, and laissez-faire leadership style. Autocratic leadership style pays
special attention to controlling behaviour. Democratic leadership style is
related to the overemphasis on inclusive behaviour. While on the other hand,
laissez-faire leadership style is focused on disengaged behaviour and disinterested
behaviour. Leadership styles are consistent behavioural patterns of a person
that describe how being a leader or managers he/she would approach and interact
with other team members and colleagues.
Leadership
styles usually depend upon the consideration and initiating structure related
dimensions. Consideration covers concern for people and process-focused
behaviour. While on the other side, initiating structure covers concerns for
production and focuses on results. Self-analysis present that my leadership
style is democratic and it relates to the leadership dimension of initiating
structure. My overall leadership style is focused on results and outcomes of
the strategies developed for the tasks and projects. Considering, my analysis managers
need to concern about production. While as a leader in the public, the process
forced and concern for people related considerations are required. Self-analysis
present that I also need to pay attention to the dimension of considerations
such as concern for people (Asrar-ul-Haq & Kuchinke,
2016).
Thus
my focus on these dimensions of leadership styles I would conclude that I also
need improvement in the consideration dimension of leadership styles. According
to the theories and research of Jack Welch the leadership behaviour can be
identified with 4 E's which relates to the approaches such as edge, energies,
energy, and execution. Considering these 4 E’s and self-analysis, my
personality strengths include a competitive edge to win, energizing behaviour,
and action-oriented activities. Relating my current managerial and leadership
competencies with the requirement of workplaces and organizations it can be
claimed that I have enough strength to fit in the strategic culture of an
organization. Moreover, being a leader my core values are integrity and
trustworthiness. These core values are highly acceptable in the society and
workplaces moreover such qualities and values work as a strength and develop leadership
in the leader.
Personal
leadership is developed in the personality traits related to the direction of
leadership and life. According to my
assessment, I evaluated that my leadership style is predominately
participative. This type of leadership style distinguishes a person from others
because I am capable of working with group members and those who understand the
objectives and goals of the task. my biggest strength is my hard-working
nature, punctuality, time management, responsibility, and ability to accomplish
the goals before deadlines. As a team player, I am a trustworthy person as I
can survive in different and severe kind of environments. My self-assessment
benchmarking shows my personality and leadership skills. According to this
analysis, I have creativity at a high level that I can generate ideas and I can
think out of the box to generate all the possible solutions to the problems.
creativity can be related to the thinking process. I am highly open to new
tasks and challenges. I always get excited about a challenging task and listen
to the point of others. I always like to admire new ideas and point of view
that are often proposed by my team members. I always give my maximum dedication
to the task that has been assigned to me. For instance, in the workplace, I like
to have a complete audit on a weekly basis to evaluate the performance of my
team members. In these audits, I always score maximum that is 99% or 100% due
to my dedication for the work. This assessment shows how much dedicated I am
toward my goals of life. I believe in honesty is the best policy and I always
follow it in my life. All the process is reliable so I can trust all under any
kind of circumstances. My leadership style is collaborative because I perform
all the tasks after having reliable group discussions. I am always prepared for
the new challenges and if I fail in accomplishing the goals, I take
responsibility. I am a confident person that has a focus on the goals and
remain confident about the work and score well in case any audits are conducted.
One of the important factors of my leadership style is my communication skills.
This skill helps me while having communication with others about the projects
even if the team members belong from different nationality. I am good in
communication because I love to learn about languages. I consider leadership as
a way that is leading to others and to get the desired results. There are
number of theories that are presented by different authors, but the best
leadership style is collaborative leadership. There are number of facts that
can be used to determine the combination of behavior and ability of someone to
accomplish the task in a team. I like to accomplish goals within the time range
with best competencies and reliable outcomes of the project. I like to take
other team members with me all on the way to go far for the goal. I emphasize
on sharing the ideas and have participative decision regarding the task
directions.
Conclusion of Self-Analysis Portfolio
The whole discussion concludes that leaders
and management require some specific characteristics, values, personality
traits, behaviors, and approaches. Self-analysis report concludes that my
leadership skills are developing with time. However, still, improvement is
required in these areas to ensure betterment in leadership and managerial
skills and capabilities. Self-analysis reports indicate that my overall
personality is centered on the current requirements of modern organizations
such as the democratic leadership style. However, problem-solving skills and
stress management are my core qualities. In response to analysis, it is decided
that I will continue existing strengths as well as develop new skills and
capabilities as a leader or manager. Leadership capabilities and management capabilities
are also discussed in this portfolio in the light of information extracted from
lecture and self-analysis questionnaires.
Tests related to essay of Self-Analysis Portfolio
Test
related to essay, according to the analysis I have performed different tests for
the personality. Moreover, being a
leader my core values are integrity and trustworthiness. These core values are
highly acceptable in the society and workplaces moreover such qualities and
values work as a strength and develop leadership in the leader. The next test is
related to the personality trait. Personal integrity, enthusiasm,
self-awareness, and tolerance of ambiguity are the key focused areas by the
domain of personal management competencies. In the essay, there is proper
