Fifth Season is a 2015 science fantasy novel, set in a world constantly
shaking and thus destroyed due to sudden seismic activities. This paper
examines how Jemisin’s world, ironically called the Stillness – though it is
everything but stable— is a representation of a postanthropocentric world in
which feminist and posthumanist theories intersect. Relying on Rosi Braidotti’s
four theses on posthuman feminism: “that feminism is not a humanism; that
Anthropos has been decentered…; that as a result, nonhuman life zoe, is now the
ruling concept that sexuality is a force beyond, beneath, and after gender”
this paper claims that this narrative argues in favour of the notion of
posthuman feminism, deconstructing the Eurocentric idea of the ideal man, while
emphasising the postanthropocentric concept that the human is only one part of various
interconnected aspects that shape and mould the world in which we live today. It’s
