What Is An Argumentative Essay?

An argumentative essay is a piece of writing in which you take a stance on an issue. In this, you make your stance strong by giving evidences or proofs which support your thesis statement. It is an essay that shows an argument on a matter, you can disagree with the opposition’s point. The writer or essayist persuades its reader to agree with his stance.

How to Write Strong Argumentative Essay?

Whatever you are doing, either it is tough or easy, there are always some steps that will guide you. We will learn how to write an argument step by step.

Topic Selection:

In the first place, choose your topic that is going to be a point and matter of argument. Your topic should be debatable. If you choose such a topic that is a fact, then you can’t get into argument by refusing it. So whatever your topic is, it should be argument able. Not choose those topics that are already proved by someone, because this will spoil your whole essay.

Start With Hook:

Start your essay with some enticing hook. Hook is a starting 2 or 3 lines of an essay. Your essay’s hook should be so alluring that it captures the attention of the reader. Your essay’s hook will decide either your reader gets interested in your essay or not. Write such words in your hook that makes it more enticing and alluring. It could be a question or a general statement.

Give Background Information:

Then give some background information on your topic. Why have you selected this issue to be raised? What is the situation? Why is it important to bring it on? Give enough of your topic’s background information to your readers so they have a clear understanding.

State Thesis Statement:

Give your thesis statement in an “introduction” part of the essay. Your thesis statement is the gist of the whole argument, so make it wisely. It should reflect and summarize your complete essay in one line. You can make a thesis statement in different ways.

Turn your argument into a question then answer it. The answer you get would be your thesis statement.

State an argument of your topic and then refuse it. It is a contrast with your argument. Explain why are you refusing it?

Just highlight the main point on which you are going to take a stance in your essay, which can be considered as your thesis statement.

Define Argument:

Define the problem first in the second part of the essay i.e. body. Give details of the topic and also state what the opposition believes. This part should cover all the statements and points that others raised. This is the point in which you state everything according to the opposition’s point of view. You may research this part and take out the points on which others believe.

Take Your Stance:

Your next paragraph should state your stance. Claim a point and give details about it. In the first line of the sentence, you refuse the whole argument that you have written in the previous paragraphs.

Provide Some Evidences:

After stating your stance, make it strong by giving evidences that are relatable to your stance or claim.  Your evidences should support your claim. Explain why you think so. You can refer to different sources to get evidences to support your stance. Research will help you in this step. Do research, find out some solid proofs.

Conclusion:

At the last, summarize your complete essay. Write down the results that came out after the whole discussion. You conclude your essay in a short paragraph. Close your concluding paragraph by leaving an impact on your reader.

How you can make your essay more compelling?

·         Use a tempting hook; it will attract your readers.

·         Try to avoid heat up topic that can attack any community or provoke someone or even you.

·         State quotes of some well-known personalities, it will make your stance stronger. But don’t overuse it as it can give an impression that you are exaggerating.

·         Add some facts and figures in your argument that are relatable to your topic. It makes your essay more valid.
