To Kill a Mockingbird is a famous
novel of the 1960s, written by Harper Lee. It gained enormous popularity
worldwide, won many awards, and translated into almost 40 languages. The novel
enlightens a very sensitive topic of racism, discrimination, unjust, and
prejudice of the society. The story is set in the era of 1930s when life for
the Black people in the United States was very hard in so many ways. It was a
time when the black community was facing discrimination and unfair behavior of
white people, who felt that they are superior to blacks in every aspect of
life. The novel is narrated by a child named Scout Finch, who is living with
her father Atticus, and brother Jem. They are living in Maycomb, a small town
settled in Alabama. The story is narrated with the eyes of Scout Finch to show
how a child sees his/her society and its overall conduct.
It is important to mention here that
Maycomb is a kind of town, which is quite racist and complex. Jem and Scout
have been so curious about their neighborhood, like they wanted to know about
one of their neighbors, Boo; who never comes out of his house. During this
period of time, when Jem and Scout have no clear idea about life and society,
they discover that their father is fighting a case in the court for Tom Robinson,
a black man from the black community. The accusation on Tom was that he had
raped and beaten a white woman. In that particular era, life for black people
was miserable, and there was no hope for Tom to get justice in this case.
Atticus also knew that but he still stood for the black man as he knew that he
was innocent, so he gave his try to stay on the right side of the truth.
However, the case went against Tom, and he was convicted for his crime. In this
awful moment, Tom tried to escape prison, and he was killed in this process.
During the days of case proceedings, Atticus’s children were subject to abuse
by society, as a white society did not accept the decision of Atticus to defend
a black man. People abused Atticus and his family; meanwhile, they received a
lot of love and respect from the black community for standing on their side,
when no one else was ready to do so.
Moreover, when the case was in
progress, Atticus had been giving arguments in favor of Tom in the court, and
during this time, he somewhat insulted Bob Ewell, the father of the woman, who
accused Tom of her rape. Bob Ewell did not like this insult, and regardless of
the fact that Tom has been convicted, Bob had a strong urge to take revenge on
Atticus for his insult. It was a dangerous thing for Atticus and his children,
as Bob could have harmed them. Meanwhile, when Bob was planning his revenge on
Atticus, the children go to school for a Halloween party as Scout was given the
role of Halloween pageant in this party. While Scout was returning home with
her brother Jem from School, Bob planned to attack children for his revenge.
Bob attacked and held Scout in his arms, and in this fight, Jem’s arm was
broken. They needed help but they had no hope to get help in this darkness. But
suddenly someone appeared on the scene, which attacked Bob and rescued Jem and
Scout. Jem was brought back to the house, and this was the moment when Scout
found that their lives were saved by their neighbor Boo.
Scout and Jem were quite amazed at
finding this fact that Boo saved them from the attacker, who was Bob, and they
knew about Bob from Sheriff, who told that Bob was found dead, and his own
knife had been the reason for his death. Atticus had a view that Bob’s death
should be probed properly, but the sheriff had a strong view that it was just
an accident, and Atticus had to agree to this fact in the end. Then Scout went
with Boo to leave him to his house just to show gentle respect for Boo, who
really saved them from Bob. Now, the curiosity of Scout was gone about Boo, who
happened to be a savior for them. After coming back home, Scout saw his father
sitting beside Jem, as he was waiting for his son to wake up, and the story end
here. Overall, the story is just a view for readers to show that they should
always stand with the truth and right side of things, and there should be a
feeling of empathy and love for other people regardless of their race,
background, etc.
