Why
People will Remember Khaled Hosseini 300 Years from Now
Hope is just a word, but it can
be an amazing thing for many if they are provided this concept with some great
perspective. It can change and transform the lives of people in so many
different ways. This is what Khaled Hosseini has been doing for his whole life,
telling stories and giving hope to people, who are deprived of their lands, or
no more able to live there for any given reasons. He tells stories with so much
beauty that a reader has to give attention to his writing. He is an
Afghan-American novelist and has a great repute for his work for immigrants. He
has written so many famous novels such as “The Kite Runner” in 2003 and “A
Thousand Splendid Suns” in 2007 (Kakutani, 2013). His own story has been an influential
one as he was a 15 years old boy when he came to the United States for asylum.
At that time, he was known to very few words of English. But look at his
transformation as he is not only a doctor now, but he is also nominated
Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations. He not only made his life successful
but inspired immigrants all over the world (RFE/RL, 2012). Khaled Hosseini contains the ability
to express the struggle that many immigrants face. He depicts how people lose
their former way of life as soon as they enter the borders, Story-telling like
this is hard to express but he does it beautifully.
It is important to understand the
perspective of Khaled Hosseini, why he thought so that telling stories to
immigrants can develop hope in them. He strongly believed that telling stories
of these refugees is crucial from countries, where any kind of fighting or war
is going on. It is vital to tell the world how it feels to be in the middle of
a war. He believes that people may not have the actual idea about war and its
devastating effect on the people, who are being affected by it. That’s why
after getting success in his life, he decided that he will do this job of
telling stories of refugees in a different way so that consciousness of the
people living in the western world can be prickled. He was a little child when
his father retired from the Afghan Embassy of Paris, and the Soviet Union
invaded war in Afghanistan. So, he and his family sought asylum from the United
States, and they were given asylum (Wallace, 2017). He believes that refugees are
important for the world, especially for the United States, and he endorsed this
during an interview on a TV show titled “Late
Night with Seth Meyers” (YouTube, 2018)
It is not an easy thing to
inspire people with your novels, and doing it with great success is even more
difficult. But Khaled Hosseini is the man, who achieved both very early in his
novel writing. He has written “The Kite Runner” in 2003 and this novel was a
great introduction to Afghanistan and its people all over the world. The novel
got so much acclaim from all over the world because his storytelling was quite
different as compared to many other novelists. After the great response for his
first novel, he became more committed to sharing the stories of deprived people
who are seeking for refuge in other parts of the world so that they can live a
better life, and save the future of their generation. Then he came up with
another masterpiece in 2007, the novel named “A Thousand Splendid Suns”. His
first novel was a great introduction to the lives of Afghani people, and the
second novel was a great story of telling about the lives of Afghani women,
which are under the Burqa. He also tried to write about stereotypes that the
western world has developed regarding his country, Afghanistan. His first novel
got great recognition in 2006 when he was given “the 2006 Humanitarian of the
Year” from the U.S. Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees. In 2008, he was included in the list of 100 most influential people
in the world by Time Magazine (Bush, 2008)
The idea of hope is a phenomenal
one by Khaled Hosseini and it is astonishing to see his belief in storytelling.
He talked about so many things in his remarkable novels and narrated stories of
the agony and pain of the refugees. He believes that writing about pain is
equally important, the pain of people, who are destructed by the harmful
effects of wars, which are continuing for maybe no reason. He thinks that
depicting this pain to the world is important so that they can make a
difference to change the fate of Afghanistan and refugees all around the world (Al Jazeera, 2014). It is quite interesting
to know that Khaled Hosseini thinks that he is not a professional writer, and
once during an interview with CBS News, he said that “I never thought it was —
I had the chops to do it,” But his remarkable story has been recognized by all
corners, and that’s why even a Hollywood movie was also produced on story of
his novel, “The Kite Runner”, a story of his own; when he was a little boy
living in Afghanistan, who loved to fly kites in the skies of his country (CBS News, 2007)
After looking at all the facts
and information on the life of Khaled Hosseini, it is quite evident that his
contribution to society has been immense in so many ways. Success is not about
raising the standard of your life, but real success is when you use your
position and success to change the lives of others. This path was chosen by
Khaled Hosseini as he believed that it is his responsibility to inspire others,
especially refugees with his inspirational story writing. It was not only to
inspire refugees, but it was an effort as an eye-opener for the western world
especially the United States to understand how war is devastating for people,
and why the western world should embrace refugees from Afghanistan and other
parts of the world. His life is inspiring others and it will continue to do so
for so many decades to come because such influential people are always
remembered by history, which has made so much contribution. When war will end
in Afghanistan and other parts of the world, the people will remember him that
he was the one, who also contributed to this peace, which we enjoy today after
300 years.
