1.  Introduction of Smart Tool Kit

FOD (Foreign Object Damage) is a major problem in the aviation industry. The FOD can be described as an object or substance which does not belong to the aircraft and cause serious damage to it. The smallest objects such as stones, paper clips, birds and tools etc. can cause huge damage to the aircraft. The tool FOD is also a big problem and occurs when workers left tools in the aircraft while they were manufacturing the aircraft or servicing it. The leftover tools I the aircraft can cause the shutdown of the flight operations or can cause injury to the passengers who are sitting in the flight. Therefore there is a need for such a solution that will allow the aviation authority to mitigate Tool FOD and can enhance the safety of the flight operation.

Aircraft safety is everyone's responsibility and it is very important to save lives and great losses. The purpose of the project is to reduce the external debris (FOD) by a certain percentage which helps to reduce aviation accidents through the project of “Smart Tools Kit”  which keeps the tools like a screwdriver, tape measure and pliers from losing and Look for them easily. The idea of this research project is to organize the tools in an orderly way by put sensors at each tool. We also have a set of lights that work with each sensor, when you take a tool such as screwdriver the lights will come on to inform the director of control. In return, we have a timer that works according to the timing of the working when any tool is lost. In case of loss of a tool is searched easily by remote control by clicking on the number of the tool and make a sound that lets us know its location.

1.1. Aim of the Project of Smart Tool Kit

In the aircraft industry safety should be the utmost priority because the risks such as FOD can cause great harm to the aircraft and the aircraft can become the victim of a huge accident which can result in the loss of many lives. Many accidents have indicated that FOD is a major threat to the aircraft and causes huge damage to the aircraft and sometimes it results in serious damage to the individuals who are in the aircraft. The purpose of the aim of this project is to decline the risk of FOD up to a lot of extents. The Smart Tools Kit project can help the aircraft industry to reduce external debris.

The smart tool kit will help the workers in the aircraft industry to manage their tools efficiently and if any worker has left the tools in the aircraft, then they can be easily located. The sensors will be placed in the tools which will allow the workers to allocate them easily. He Smart Tool Kit project can not only be used in the aviation industry but can also be applied in industries such as railways, marine vessels, automation, oil & gas, and other engineering industries where FOD can cause serious consequences. With Smart Tool kit, the workers will not lose the tools, and if this happens, then tools can be found in less amount of time.

The aim of this research project is to find a solution to the problem of Tool FOD. The project's aim is to reduce accidents and provide safety in-flight maintenance. The FOD is a major problem, and if this problem is analyzed critically, then it can be understood that it not only deadly for the machines but also for human beings as well. Due to FOD, the aviation industry lost millions of dollars. Therefore the motivation behind this project is not only to enhance safety but also to mitigate the financial loss which occurs due to the FOD.

The Smart Tool Kit project has the potential to revolutionize the safety mechanism of the aviation industry. The application of this project is not limited to the aviation industry alone. This project can be applied in other industries as well where FOD causes havoc. The safety of human beings must be the utmost priority of aviation. The aviation industry has taken measures to control the issue FOD; however, sometimes accidents still occur which makes the management aviation industry realize the loopholes that still exist in the safety measures taken by the aviation authorities.

The research will provide the answers regarding the severity of the FOD problem and up to what extent the Smart Tool Kit can mitigate the problem. The research will not only provide information to aeronautical engineers but also to the individuals of chemical, mechanical and civil engineers as well. The research has proposed a solution to a very serious problem and its results have the potential to counter various risks such as finical loss, accidents and other such risks. In short, it can be said that the Smart Tool Kit project has a vast scope and can be applied in various fields other than aviation. Although the study has focused on the safety of the aviation industry but its results can be applied in other fields as well where Tool FOD causes damage.

The study will provide an answer to the following research questions:

·         Up to what percentage Smart Tool Kit idea can mitigate the issue of FOD in the aviation industry

·         Will Smart Tool Kit project enhance the safety of the machines and the people associated with the aviation industry

·         Would this project be applicable only in the aviation filed or can be applied in other fields as well?

Through the above research questions, the study will try to provide deep insights regarding up to what extent Smart Tool Kit idea is applicable in the aviation industry and how it will enhance the safety of the individuals.

2. Literature Review of Smart Tool Kit

According to the author Solomon, he has talked about the important issue related to security screening in the aviation industry. There is a requirement of a better model for security purposes to meet the demand of the future. This is because the number of passengers is increasing so there is a need for a risk-based security system that is combined with the improved screening technology. If this model enables the gates, then it will provide comprehensive security to the aviation department. But for that, there is a need for comprehensive research that will discuss the empirical basis of the risk (Solomon Wong & Brooks, 2015).

3. Joint Expansion of Smart Tool Kit

According to the description in the appendix, the expansion joint for the aircraft is related to the temperature service. It can be noted that these joints can be used for the exhaust manifolds and also help in the internal combustion engines of the craft.

Moreover, the exhaust manifolds that are located in the internal engines of the aircraft are also reaching toward high operating temperatures. The main thing is that it is creating peculiar problems that are due to the expansion and contraction of the metal at high temperatures.  Furthermore, according to the linear expansion problem of the aircraft, is due to the rigid slip joints that are present near to the engine.

4.  Snap-on tools of Smart Tool Kit

These tools are extremely important for the aviation industry. They are used during the manufacturing of the aircraft. In the snap on tools, there is a number of tools that are categorized in different groups. In these groups, all of these tools are arranged according to the requirement. Through selecting any kind of group, you are able to organize different parts of the aircraft in a proper way. The first group all tools are related to hand and then in the next group, all of these tools are related to power. There are some groups, like structure, inspection and control tools.
