Stereotyping
in Hollywood
Utkarsh
Ambudkar is an American actor and renowned for TV series White Famous,
Brockmire and the Simpsons. He has not only an actor but a musician and rapper
as well. Utkarsh Ambudkar is a talented actor and over the years his acting
skills have matured. On Rich Roll Podcast he has discussed several things which
include his personal life career and how it is like to work in Hollywood.
Utkarsh Ambudkar discussed Hollywood Stereotyping and how different Hollywood
stars who come from different backgrounds and ethnicities get effected by
Hollywood Stereotyping. According to Ambudkar stereotyping is impacting the lives
and career of various stars who are very talented but are not getting the
opportunities which, the American Hollywood stars get (Roll, 2018).
In
the show, Ambudkar gives the example of Dev Patel who gets overnight fame and stardom
from the movie Slumdog millionaire. Ambudkar said that Dev Patel is an Oscar-winning
Star and a very talented actor but over the years he did not get many
opportunities in Hollywood. Ambudkar said that he did not get a good response
in Hollywood much because he is from an Indian background. Ambudkar then gives
the example of Kunal Nayyar an Indian American who is famous for the role of
Raj in Big Bang Theory. He said that he is such a talented guy but we have seen
him in movies or other television series quite often (Roll, 2018)
It
is true that stereotyping exists in Hollywood and it is not a new thing. From
the past decades, there are many examples of Hollywood stereotyping but the
question is it is a serious problem or not. The answer to this question would
be yes because it is not ethically or socially correct. It is the right of every
person to get an equal chance in the industry. Hollywood should give the chance
based on talent and skills not on their attitudes, believes or ethnicities.
It
is evident that if only white people or native American people are going to get
a chance in Hollywood than the people from different nationalities who are
residing in America will unable to show their talent to the world. The talented
actors such as Dev Patel and Kunal Nayyar should be given equal opportunities
so that they can show their talent to the world. It is there right to get equal
opportunity in Hollywood just like any other American star. There are many
people who praise their acting (Roll, 2018).
It
is important to address the issue of stereotyping because it is affecting the
lives of the stars who work in Hollywood. It is not just Indian Americans who
face difficulty in the industry but also other individuals as well. If the
issue of stereotyping is not going to be resolved on urgent basis than in
future more people will get affected from the issue which means that the people
from different ethnicities or background will be keeping on facing the same
issue and there basic right of equal opportunity in the industry will not be
fulfilled.
The
Hollywood itself can raise voice against the stereotyping. The awareness should
be created in the Hollywood industry regarding the stereotyping issue so that
the people who are facing the issue of stereotyping can get rights which they
deserve. Hollywood should realize the significance of talent and should only
promote talent instead of focusing on ethnicities, backgrounds or cultures of
different people. There are many people who want to see good acting and
entertainment and the Hollywood industry will be more strengthen if it is going
to focus on the abilities of different actors.
