Essay on ONYX STONE AND ITS ORIGIN

Category: Education Paper Type: Essay Writing Reference: APA Words: 600

In most of the markets and in the commercial industry of the stone, onyx is more commonly known as the rock that is made of different layers and different bands. The layers that are present in the onyx are mostly light in color and are mostly made of the minerals that are translucent. According to the different geologists, the onyx rock is more probably known as the calcite that is banded. Onyx is most commonly define as a sibling of the marble in the commercial stone industry but it is way different than marble due to its unique characteristics. The composition of the onyx rock is different from other rocks that made thus rock soft and is found are and is very expensive unlike other rocks like the marble and the limestone. All these things made onyx different from other rocks moreover this is a rock with various uses in different items. Onyx is made with different processes and different ways that are as follows.

Origin of the Onyx Rocks:  Unlike other rock types and other marbles onyx is not found beneath the surface of the Earth, it is found right above the surface of the Earth. Other rocks are made from the molten lava underground and different chemical and the physical processes but onyx is made from the groundwater or the spring water. The ground water and the spring water that has a lot of dissolved calcite in it.

This water when mainly emerges from the mouth of the spring then the crystals present in the water are precipitated out and then these crystals out of the calcite crystals build a crust. With the passage of the time, when more water flows it deposit more minerals and in this way more minerals are settled. But still there is a variation between the onyx stone layers and this variation mostly occurs due to the difference in the flow of the water and the different impurities that are in the flowing water.

Calcite crystals are basically white in color and are pure as well but still some impurities and some minerals make the calcite tinted and pale in color. The mot seen and the most common color of the onyx is the color of the honey, light golden and brown and this color occurs in the onyx stone due to the iron oxides that are present in the water. Different flows of the water create different layers upon the onyx stone and has variations due to the water flows moving with different flows at different speed. This flow gives an artistic and more interesting and unique patterns to the onyx rocks and create bands on the onyx rocks of various colors and also create different bands as well.

Onyx slabs are usually made from the slicing of the stones and slicing the stones reveals the different layers of the onyx and also the different deposits that are settled in the onyx for many years.

Onyx can not only be formed from the spring water and from the flowing water and underground water but onyx rocks can also be formed inside the caves and sometimes they are also formed in the openings of the bedrock as well. In limestone rock, some veins of the calcite can be found and it can been seen in the limestones that are fractured. Calcite is often found in the volcanic rocks as well. The different patents and the bands of the onyx rocs can be created everywhere but some discoveries are need to happen as these things do not happen suddenly.
