Introduction of Electric Motor
In this
report, there is comprehensive information on the electric motor. In the first
part of the report, there is information about an electric motor. Then after
this, there is complete information about how to build the electric motor with
steps. Then after this in the last part of the report there is complete
information about the operation of electric motor and how each part of the motor
works.
Aim of the project of Electric Motor
The main
aim of this project is to find out how magnets and electricity are working
together in an electric motor.
What is an electric motor?
It is a
machine that is involved in converting electrical energy in the form of
valuable mechanical energy. The main purpose of this motor is to provide
efficient mechanical energy that can be used for industrial use. There is about
two types of power sources are used for its operation. The first one is DC
supply and the next one is the AC supply. These motors may be categorized
according to the power source type, application, internal construction and type
for output motion. It can be noted that
these motors are involved in producing a rotatory force that is done through
the use of magnets. These magnets are allowing the coil to move in a rotatory
condition and due to this the electrical energy is converted in mechanical (Austin Hughes, 2013).
Step for building an electric motor
To make a
simple electric motor contain quite simple steps. Through following these steps
it will become extremely easy to make a simple electric motor at your home.
The first
step is to find out the material and tools that are required to create a motor.
These tools include pliers, pair of scissors, wire cutters, tape, and a glue
gun. On the other hand, some materials include paper clips, magnets wooden
blocks, DC wires and a battery.
In the next
step, there is a need to create a copper coil. For that case, take a roll of
copper wire and then after this cut the length of wire for about 2 feet through
wire cutters. Now starting winding the copper coil and make it tighter.
Moreover, leave some of the lengths of the wire from both ends and also strip
the wires from both ends (Hughes, 2005).
In the next
step, there is a need to sand both ends of the copper coil. Due to sanding, it
will become simple to remove any part that will create hurdle during operation.
After sanding both ends of the copper wire will become smooth.
In the next
step, there is a need to build a rig that will hold the copper wire. This can
be done through the help of a paper clip. For that case, there is a need to
organize clips in such a way that they will hang like a proper rig for the
copper wire. Then after this at the end of these clips attach two wires with
the help of soldering. Both of these wire will be connected to a battery. Moreover,
all of these adjustments will be done on a wooden block.
The next
step is related to the attaching of the magnet. This magnet will be attached
with the help of a glue gun. This step needs complete concentration. This is
because if you don't place a magnet at the right place then the motor will not
work properly. For that case, just mount the magnet in the middle of these two
paper clips with the help of a glue gun.
In the next
step, there is a need to make a proper platform for an electric source. For
this take a wooden block and mount a battery on it through the help of a hot
glue gun. Moreover, properly connect both wires with the battery through
soldering (Herman, 2009).
Now after
this put the copper coil on the paper clip rig and make sure that this coil is
balanced and exposed ends are touching paper clips. Then check the connection
properly with the battery. Then turn it on and it can be seen that the copper
coil starts rotating. Moreover, if the copper coil is not spinning then it
means it’s both ends are not properly sanded. Furthermore, make some adjustment
for balancing this coil after this the motor will work properly.
How the motor operates and function of its
different parts
The motor
operates when an electric power source is applied from the input and through
this the coil present in it will rotate through the help of magnets and
mechanical energy is produced.
There are
different parts of an electric motor that includes a power source, field
magnet, and commutator, Armature, coil, brushes, and Armature core. All of these
parts are extremely important for a motor (Herman, 2009).
Power
source: there are about two types of power sources are used in a motor. The
main purpose of the power source is to supply the power to the armature of the
motor and its field coils.
Field
magnet: This magnet is involved in producing a torque on the rotating armature
coil through the phenomenon of Fleming's left-hand rule.
Commutator:
It is known as the rotating interface of the coil that contains a complete
circuit.
Brushes:
This is a device that is involved in the conduction of current between the
moving and stationary part like in the rotating shaft.
Armature
core: it is involved in holding the armature coil and also providing efficient
mechanical support.
Armature
coil: it is involved in helping the motor to run with a smooth phase.
Conclusion of Electric Motor
Summing up
all the discussion from above, it is concluded that electric motors are just
converting the electrical energy into mechanical. In this report, there is
brief information about the electric motors. It can be noted that there are two
main types of these motors, the first one is DC and the other one is AC motor.
Moreover, how to make a simple DC motor is explained with some important steps.
In the end, there is complete information about the working of different parts
of the motor in detail (Tong, 2014).
